Abstract

For the calculation of the dose the Loevinger formula for beta particles and an exponential formula for electromagnetic radiations are generally used. In the present paper, the authors intend to examine whether, in the case of cutaneous contamination, the use of an exponential formula (like the formula of Rossi and Ellis) and a similar formula might be considered as satisfactory for the calculation of the beta and the gamma dose, respectively. With this aim the results obtained for this particular type of geometry by the Rossi and Ellis formula and by the Loevinger formula for beta particles have been compared; for gamma radiation the values obtained by the exponential formula and by two more elaborated formulae, suitable for the conditions of maximum photonic build-up and of null photonic build-up, were compared. The results permit the conclusion that, for the geometric conditions considered, both the dose from beta radiation and that from gamma radiation to the basal layer of the skin can be determined by the exponential type formula: the results in fact are acceptable from a health protection standpoint.
