Abstract

The oldest rocks of the Miramar sheet are represented by sediments of the Formacion Punta Carballo (Miocene), which are exposed at the SW of the sheet. However, volcanic rocks of the older Grupo Aguacate (Miocene-Pliocene) and overlying Formacion Monterverde (Lower Pleistocene) have dominated in the map area. The Pliocene of Pleistocene silicic ignimbrites and Quaternary sediments are subordinated in minor surface. New K-Ar ages yielded 4,41{+-}0,15 and 4,99{+-}0,36 Ma for the Grupo Aguacate and 1,77{+-}0,11 and 1,71{+-}0,22 Ma for the Formacion Monteverde. Gabrodioritic stock was newly mapped in the Grupo Aguacate accompanying numerous other intrusive bodies of variable composition and is described for the first time in this work. New K-Ar ages were obtained for the rhyodacitic domes; 1,71{+-}0,14 Ma for the cerro La Cruz Dome and 1,59{+-}0,12 Ma for the cerro San Miguel Dome. Definition of volcanic units is based on detailed petrography, XRD, microprobe and 33 new bulk-rock chemical analyses. Sin embargo, las vulcanitas del Grupo Aguacate (Mioceno-Plioceno) sobreyacidas por vulcanitas de la Formacion Monteverde (Pleistoceno Inferior), han representado la mayor extension del mapa. Las ignimbritas silicicas del Plioceno hasta Pleistoceno y sedimientos del Cuaternario se han encontrado en menor superficie. Nuevas dataciones con el metodo K-Ar han establecido edades de 4,41{+-}0,15 y 4,99{+-}0,36 Ma para el Grupo Aguacate y de 1,77{+-}0,11 y 1,71{+-}0,22 Ma para la Formacion Monteverde. El Grupo de Aguacate tambien esta conformado por una serie de cuerpos intrusivos de composicion variable, entre ellos un stock gabrodioritico que fue recien mapeado y es descrito por primera vez con este trabajo. Nuevas dataciones K-Ar se han hecho del domo riodacitico cerro La Cruz, cuya edad fue datada en 1,71{+-}0,14 Ma y del domo cerro San Miguel en 1,59{+-} 0,12 Ma. La definicion de las unidades volcanicas es basada en la petrografia detallada de las rocas, asi como en los resultados de la difractometria de rayos X, microsonda electronica y 33 analisis quimicos.
