Abstract
The use of dielectrics such as mica, glasses and plastic materials for charged particle track recording has been developed in the past years; track recording of fission fragments produced in fissile materials under neutron irradiation is particularly interesting. The method has not as yet been applied to neutron dosimetry owing to the difficulties of track observation and counting using optical microscopes. A method has recently been proposed which results in markedly reduced counting times, electronic counting of the electric discharges between two electrodes through the dielectric which was perforated by the fission fragments. The reasons for adopting this new technique to set-up a neutron dosimeter are: (a) economic advantages, since a rather simple electronic instrumentation will give a reading of the dosimeter, preparation of which can be carried out immediately and at a modest cost; (b) fast reading, since the response can be obtained in less than two hours from irradiation; (c) dosimetric advantages owing to the lack of fading and insensitivity to {beta} or {gamma} radiations. The present work describes the method adopted and the equipment used to set up the dosimeter. Results are reported and briefly discussed. Cette methode n'a pas, jusqu a present, ete appliquee a la dosimetrie des neutrons a cause des difficultes que presentent l' observation et le comptage des traces au microscope optique. On a propose recemment une methode qui permet de reduire considerablement la duree de l' operation en comptant electroniquement les decharges electriques qui se produisent entre deux electrodesaa travers l' echantillon isolant perce par les fragments de fission. Les considerations qui ont convaincu les auteurs d* adopter cette nouvelle technique pour la realisation d' un dosimetre a neutrons sont: a) ses avantages economiques, puisque avec une instrumentation electronique assez simple on obtient une lecture du dosimetre, dont la preparation est immediate et le cout modique; b) la rapidite de lecture: on obtient le resultat moins de deux heures apres la fin de l' irradiation; c) les avantages du point de vue dosimetrique, surtout l' absence de ' fading' et l'insensibilite aux rayonnements {beta} et {gamma}. Les auteurs decrivent la methode adoptee et l' instrumentation utilisee pour la realisation du dosimetre. Finalement, ils rapportent et discutent les resultats obtenus. (author)}
