Abstract
A comparison of techniques for measuring the renal clearance of Hippuran using a single injection of {sup 131}I sodium orthoiodohippurate in 30 normal subjects and 49 patients showed that a simplified technique using limited samples of blood gave comparable results to more complicated blood and external monitoring techniques without significant loss of accuracy. The clearance value in normal subjects was 645 ml/1.73 m{sup 2} ({+-} 108 ml) and is comparable with results obtained elsewhere. Together with a renogram examination this measurement enables more information to be obtained and helps to distinguish vascular and parenchymal disorders from purely obstructive lesions. It may be useful in the problem of renal tuberculosis and in distinguishing benign kidney lesions from malignant. (author)
