Abstract

A very wide variety of sample preparation is used in the Special Training Division's research and teaching programmes. These range from simple source holders such as metal, cardboard and plastic source mounts, to precipitation devices using stainless steel and fibreglass mounts, and special source holders for liquid counting of samples. In addition to these techniques, a number of procedures of special interest in biomedical problems have been developed. One of the most important of these is the use of a catalytic synthesis of benzene which has been developed to the point to which an over-all yield of better than 90% is obtained. This synthesis can be used for carbon-containing compounds of interest in low-level tracing experiments and age dating problems. Since the synthesis involves the production of carbon dioxide at one step and the hydration of metallic carbide in another, it can be used either for the measurement of {sup 14}C or {sup 3}H or both in double labelling experiments. Considerable work is done on activation analysis of biological materials, particularly in the Division's radioecological programmes. Special techniques for the preparation of these materials for activation analysis and other radiochemical procedures are described. Since the problem of resolution in alpha-ray  More>>

Since the problem of resolution in alpha-ray spectroscopy remains a very difficult one, considerable work is carried out by the oceanography and environmental studies group in the development of very thin samples which are capable of permitting higher resolution of alpha-ray spectra. These employ electrodeposition procedures from mixed solvents. Measurements are made with a special bank of Fairstein-Frisch grid counters associated with a 512-channel analyser for simultaneous recording of more than one spectrum. Solid-state detectors are also used and comparative results of gridded and solid-state detectors are shown. A cet effet, on utilise des procedes de separation electrolytique a partir de solvants mixtes. Les mesures sont faites a l'aide d'une serie de compteurs a grilles Fairstein-Frisch relies a un analyseur a 512 canaux pour l'enregistrement simultane de plusieurs spectres. On utilise en outre des detecteurs a semi-conducteurs. L'auteur compare les donnees fournies par ces derniers aux resultats obtenus a l'aide de detecteurs a grilles. (author) [Spanish] En el desarrollo de los programas de investigacion y de capacitacion profesional de la Division de Formacion Especial se utiliza una amplia variedad de metodos de preparacion de muestras, que abarcan desde el empleo de sencillos portafuentes a base de materiales tales como metal, cartulina y plasticos hasta el de dispositivos de precipitacion que utilizan soportes de acero inoxidable y fibra de vidrio y portafuentes especiales para el recuento por centelleo laquido. Admas de estas tecnicas, se han elaborado diversos procedimientos de interes especial para la resolucion de problemas biomedicos. Uno de los mas importantes consiste en el empleo de una sintesis catalitica del benceno que se ha perfeccionado hasta el punto de que se obtiene un rendimiento global superior al 90%. Esta sintesis puede aplicarse a los compuestos de carbono de interes para los experimentos con indicadores de baja actividad y problemas de determinacion de edades. Dado que la sintesis entrana la produccion de anhidrido carbonico en una fase y la hidratacion de carburo metalico en otra, puede utilizarse ya sea para medir {sup 14}Co o {sup 3}H o ambos en experimentos con marcacion doble. Se realiza una labor considerable en la esfera del analisis por activacion de sustancias biologicas, particularmente en la ejecucion de los programas radioecologicos de la division. Se describen tecnicas especiales para la preparacion de estas sustancias destinadas al analisis por activacion y otras operaciones radioquimicas. Dado que sigue siendo dificil la cuestion de la resolucion en la espectroscopia alfa, el grupo da estudios oceanograficos y ambientales lleva a cabo una labor considerable de preparacion de muestras muy delgadas que permiten alcanzar una resolucion mas elevada de los espectros alfa. Para ello se utilizan procedimientos de deposito electrolitico a partir de mezclas disolventes. Se efectuan mediciones con una bateria especial de contadores Fairstein-Frisch de rejilla conectados a un analizador de 512 canales para el registro simultaneo de mas de un espectro. Tambien se utilizan detectores de estado solido y se comparan los resultados obtenidos con detectores de rejilla y de semiconductores. Opisyvajutsja special'nye metody prigotovlenija jetih materialov dlja aktivacionnogo analiza, a takzhe drugie radiohimicheskie metody. Poskol'ku problema razreshajushhej sposobnosti v al'fa-spektroskopii vse eshhe predstavljaet krajnjuju trudnost', gruppa po izucheniju problem okeanografii i okruzhajushhej sredy rabotaet nad sozdaniem ochen' tonkih obrazcov, s pomoshh'ju kotoryh mozhno poluchit' bolee vysokuju razreshajushhuju sposobnost' spektrov al'fa-izluchenij. Oni trebujut primenenija metodov jelektroosazhdenija iz smeshannyh rastvoritelej. Izmerenija proizvodjatsja s pomoshh'ju special'noj batarei setchatyh schetchikov Farshtejna-Frisha, soedinennyh s 512-kanal'nym analizatorom dlja odnovremennoj registracii neskol'kih spektrov. Ispol'zujutsja takzhe kristallicheskie detektory. Privodjatsja sravnitel'nye rezul'taty setchatyh i kristallicheskih detektorov. (author)}
