Abstract

The paper describes an automatic device for the ultrasonic inspection of co-laminated fuel element claddings. The elements are placed in a stainless steel tank filled with water and are carried under the ultrasonic beam by rollers. An auxiliary reflector makes it possible to use the same transducer for both emission and reception. The plates are scanned by six transducers fixed around the edge of a rotating disc, each transducer being brought into action every one-sixth turn by relays triggered by magnetized sectors, so that the ultrasonic pencil traces a series of linked arcs on the surface of the plate. The amount of energy passing through the plate is measured accurately at each point. The measured value is fed into a special recorder which traces a full-scale image of the element inspected (the instrument uses ordinary paper and records by means of carbon papery. Flaws appear as dark patches on the recording. The apparatus can operate either at all-or-nothing response with a pre-determined marking threshold, or at half-tone response. (author) [French] Les auteurs decrivent un appareillage automatique destine a verifier, par une methode ultrasonore, la qualite du gainage des elements colamines. Ces elements, immerges dans une cuve en acier inoxydable remplie d'eau et entraines par des rouleaux, defilent sous le faisceau ultrasonore. Un reflecteur auxiliaire permet d'utiliser le meme traducteur pour remission et la reception. L'exploration des plaques est realisee par six traducteurs situes a la peripherie d'un disque rotatif. Chaque traducteur est mis en service tous les 1/6 de tour par l'intermediaire de relais commandes par des secteurs aimantes. De la sorte, le pinceau ultrasonore decrit sur la surface de la plaque une serie d'arcs de cercle jointifs. La quantite d'energie transmise a travers la plaque est mesuree avec precision en chaque point. Le resultat de la mesure est applique a un enregistreur special qui donne une reproduction en vraie grandeur de l'element examine (le papier de l'enregistreur est de type ordinaire; l'inscription s'effectue au moyen de papier carbone). Sur l'enregistrement obtenu, les defauts apparaissent sous forme de taches foncees. L'appareillage peut fonctionner, soit en tout ou rien avec un seuil de marquage predetermine, soit en demi-teintes. Les traducteurs, dont la frequence peut varier de 3 a 15 MHz, sont excites par des impulsions breves. Les traducteurs utilisies, en titanate de baryum, ont un diametre de 3 mm. (author) [Spanish] Se describe en esta memoria un aparato automatico destinado a verificar, por un metodo ultrasoniso, la calidad de las vainas fabricadas con elementos colaminados. Estos elementos movidos por rodillos pasan bajo el haz ultrasonico sumergidos en una cuba de acero inoxidable llena de agua. Un reflector auxiliar permite utilizar los mismos transductores para la emision y la recepcion. La exploracion de las placas se lleva a cabo mediante seis transductores dispuestos en la periferia de un disco rotativo. Los transductores entran en funcion uno tras otro, cada 1/6 de vuelta, por intermedio de un sistema reles accionados por sectores imanados. De esta manera, el haz ultrasonico describe sobre la superficie de la placa una serie de arcos de circunferencia tangentes entre sf. La cantidad de energia transmitida a traves de la placa se mide con precision en cada punto y el resultado de la determinacion se aplica a un registrador especial que reproduce a tramano natural el elemento inspeccionado (el papel del registrador es de tipo corriente y la inscripcion se realiza mediante papel carbonico). En el registro asf obtenido, los defectos aparecen en forma de manchas oscuras. El aparato puede trabajar como 'todo o nada' con umbral de registro predeterminado, o bien hacerlo con tintes intermedios. Los transductores, cuya frecuencia puede variar de 3 a 15 MHz, se excitan mediante impulsos breves. Los transductores utilizados son de titanato de bario y tienen un diametro de 3 mm. El paso de exploracion puede de 0,3 a 0,6 mm y la velocidad lineal est comprendida entre 5 y 20 mm/s. El conjunto puede admitir elementos de las siguientes dimensiones maximas: longitud 2 000 mm, ancho. 150 mm, espesor 25 mm. Preobrazovateli, chastota kotoryh mozhet kolebat'sja ot 3 do 15 Mgc, vozbuzhdajutsja korotkimi impul'sami. Primenjaemye preobrazovateli na titanate barija imejut diametr 3 mm.
