Abstract

The Danish Atomic Energy Commission has undertaken a design study oi an organic-cooled, heavy- water-moderated power reactor. The fuel element for the reactor is a 19-rod bundle; the fuel rods contain sintered uranium-dioxide pellets canned in 2-m long, helically-finned tubes of Sintered Aluminium Product (SAP). A very high quality of the canning tubes is necessary to obtain the optimum heat-transfer conditions and to maintain the integrity of the fuel element during reactor service. Two examples of tube design illustrate the narrow dimensional tolerances. In order to ensure an adequate quality of the canning tubes, a stringent quality control has been established, to a wide extent based upon non-destructive methods. An account is presented of the non-destructive techniques developed for measuring wall thickness and diameters and for detecting defects. The complex 24-finned cross-section prevents the application of ultrasonic or eddy-current methods for wall-thickness measurements. Therefore, a special recording beta-gauge has been developed, based upon the attenuation of beta radiation from a Sr{sup 90} source placed inside the tube. An ultrasonic immersion resonance method is used for the continuous recording of the wall thickness of the more simple 12-finned tube design. Flaw detection is carried out by the ultrasonic pulse-echo immersion technique and by eddy-current inspection.. Transverse cracks can easily be detected by the ultrasonic method whereas inspection for longitudinal flaws has not appeared feasible with this method. Therefore, eddy-current inspection is applied in addition to the ultrasonic testing. (author) [French] La Commission de l'energie atomique danoise a entrepris l'etude d'un reacteur de puissance refroidi par un fluide organique et ralenti a l'eau lourde. L'element combustible est constitue par un assemblage de 19 barreaux; chaque barreau contient des pastilles de bioxyde d'uranium fritte, dans une gaine de 2'm de long en poudre d'aluminium frittee portant des ailettes disposees en configuration helicoiedale. Ces gaines doivent repondre a des specifications tres strictes pour que soient realisees les conditions optimales de transfert de chaleur et que soit maintenue l'integrite des elements combustibles aussi longtemps qu'ils restent dans le reacteur. Deux exemples de modeles de gaines montrent a quel point les tolerances di- mensionnelles sont faibles. Afin de s'assurer que les gaines repondent bien aux specifications, on procede a un controle extremement rigoureux, constitue en grande partie par des essais non destructifs. Les auteurs decrivent les methodes d'essais non destructifs mises au point pour mesurer l'epaisseur de la paroi et les diametres et pour deceler les defectuosites. En raison de la geometrie complexe de sa section, le modele a 24 ailettes ne se prete pas a l'application de methodes par les ultrasons ou par les courants de Foucault pour mesurer l'epaisseur de la paroi. On a donc mis au point une jauge a rayons beta speciale, pourvue d'un dispositif d'enregistrement; elle est fondee sur l'attenuation du rayonnement beta emis par une source au {sup 90}Sr placee a l'interieur de la gaine. Pour le modele a 12 ailettes, on utilise une methode de resonance ultrasonore en immersion pour l'enregistrement continu de l'epaisseur de la paroi. On mesure, en enregistrement continu, les diametres interieur et exterieur (au niveau des tetes d'ailettes) avec des appareils comportant une jauge a air rapide. Pour la detection des defectuosites, on applique la methode ultrasonore impulsion-echo, en immersion, et la methode des courants de Foucault. La methode ultrasonore permet de deceler facilement les fissures transversales, mais elle ne semble pas applicable a la detection des fissures longitudinales; c'est pourquoi on la complete par la methode des courants de Foucault. (author) [Spanish] La Comision de Energia Atomica de Dinamarca ha emprendido el estudio de un reactor de potencia con refrigerante organico y moderador de agua pesada. Los correspondientes elementos combustibles consisten en haces de 19 barras formadas por pastillas de dioxido de uranio sinterizado, encerradas en tubos de producto de aluminio sinterizado (SAP), de 2 m de longitud, provistos de aletas helicoidales. Para obtener condiciones optimas de transmision de calor y mantener la integridad del elemento combustible durante el funcionamiento del reactor, es necesario contar con tubos de muy alta calidad. Se citan dos ejemplos que ponen de manifiesto las estrechas tolerancias dimensionales adoptadas. Para asegurar una calidad adecuada de los tubos, se establecio un control de calidad muy estricto, basado en gran medida en la aplicacion de metodos no destructivos. Se describen en esta memoria las tecnicas desarrolladas para medir el espesor de pared y los diametros, y para descubrir defectos. La compleja seccion transversal, con 24 aletas, impide aplicar metodos ultrasonicos o de comentes de Foucault para medir el espesor de la pared. Por consiguiente, se desarrollo un calibre registrador de rayos beta, cuyo funcionamiento se basa en la atenuacion sufrida por la radiacion beta proveniente de una fuente de {sup 90}Sr colocada en el interior del tubo. Para el registro continuo del espesor de la pared del tubo con seccion transversal mas simple, de 12 aletas, se utiliza un metodo ultrasonico de resonancia por inmersion. Los diametros interno y externo (entre puntos de aletas) se registran de manera continua mediante calibres neumaticos rapidos. Las fallas se detectan mediante la tecnica de eco de impulsos ultrasonicos, y examinando los tubos con corrientes de Foucault. El metodo ultrasonico permite descubrir facilmente las fisuras transversales, pero hasta ahora ha sido imposible utilizarlo para la deteccion de defectos longitudinales. Por consiguiente, ademas del ensayo ultrasonico, se aplica el examen con corrientes de Foucault. Dva primera otnositel'no konstrukcii trub svidetel'stvujut ob ochen' nebol'shih razmernyh dopuskah. Dlja obespechenija sootvetstvujushhego kachestva trub razrabotan strogij kontrol' v znachitel'noj stepeni osnovannyj na nedestruktivnyh metodah. Slozhnoe poperechnoe sechenie 24-rebernoj truby ne pozvoljaet primenjat' ul'trazvukovye metody ili metody vihrevyh tokov dlja izmerenija tolshhiny stenok. Pojetomu razrabotan special'nyj kontrol'no-izmeritel'nyj pribor, registrirujushhij beta-izluchenie, osnovannyj na principe oslablenija beta-izluchenija, poluchaemogo ot istochnika stroncija-90, pomeshhennogo vnutri truby. Metod ul'trazvukovogo rezonansa pri pogruzhenii primenjaetsja dlja postojannoj registracii tolshhiny stenok bolee prostyh konstrukcij 12-rebernyh trub. Vnutrennij i vneshnij (mezhdu granjami reber) diametry postojanno registrirujutsja bystrodejstvujushhimi sistemami vozduhomerov. Defekty obnaruzhivajut s pomoshh'ju ul'trazvuka metodom impul's-jeho i metodom vihrevyh tokov. Metodom ul'trazvuka mozhno legko obnaruzhivat' poperechnye no ne prodol'nye treshhiny.
