Abstract

The Israel programme on the irradiation of agricultural produce is being co-ordinated by a committee set up by the Israel National Scientific Research Council, consisting of representatives of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the Ministry of Agriculture, and the various growers and marketing associations. The programme is threefold: to obtain Government approval of crops already licensed elsewhere (potatoes, onions), to work on local problems (apricots, pears) and on items of export importance (citrus, bananas, avocados). A 30 000 Ci source was installed in a versatile irradiator of novel design. Objects ranging from a few grams to 50 kg are treated with 20 to 5 x 10{sup 6}-rad doses at dose-rates of 1.5 to 800 krad/h For citrus, the effects of growing conditions, maturity, irradiation conditions and storage temperature were investigated. Seven million irradiated Mediterranean fruit flies were released per week in a test programme. The lethal doses for immature stages of fruit fly were determined. Summer- and winter-crop potatoes of the ''Up-to-date'' variety were stored up to 12 months at different temperatures, after irradiation at different doses and dose-rates, in 40-kg batches. Preliminary experiments were conducted on sugar beets to prevent loss of sucrose between harvesting and extraction, on dehydrated vegetables to reduced cooking time, on filled chocolate confectionery for insect disinfestation, and canned juice from irradiated oranges. (author) [French] Le programme israelien d'irradiation des produits agricoles est actuellement coordonne par un comite cree par le Conseil national de la recherche scientifique d'Israeel, qui se compose de representants de la Commission israelienne de l'energie atomique, du Ministere de l'agriculture et des diverses associations de producteurs et de distributeurs. Ce programme a un triple objectif: obtenir l'approbation du Gouvernement pour les produits deja autorises ailleurs (pommes de terre, oignons), etudier les problemes locaux (abricots, poires) et les problemes d'exportation (agrumes, bananes, avocats). Une source de 30 000 Ci a ete montee dans un irradiateur a usage multiple de type nouveau. Cet appareil traite des articles d'un poids variant de quelques grammes a 50 kg a des doses de 20 a 5 x 10{sup 6} rad selon un debit de dose de 1,5 a 800 krad/h. Pour les agrumes, les auteurs ont fait des recherches sui les effets des conditions de croissance, de' la maturite, des conditions d'irradiation et de la temperature de stockage. Dans le cadre d'une campagne d'essai, on a lache par semaine 7 millions de mouches mediterraneennes des fruits irradiees. Les auteurs ont determine les doses mortelles pour les stades non adultes de la mouche des fruits. Les auteurs ont stocke, pendant des periodes allant jusqu'a 12 mois et a des temperatures differentes, des pommes de terre d'ete et d'hiver de la variete 'Up-to-date' , apres irradiation par lots de 40 kg a des doses et debits de dose differents. Ils procedent actuellement a des essais en vue de determiner dans quelle mesure l'irradiation retarde la germination des oignons. Ils poursuivent egalement des essais sur le retardement de la maturation de bananes provenant de trois regions climatiques, et de trois varietes d'avocats. (author) [Spanish] El programa de Israel relativo a la irradiacion de productos agricolas esta coordinado por una comision establecida por el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas e integrada por representantes de la Comision de Energia Atomica, del Ministerio de Agricultura y de las diversas asociaciones de agricultores y vendedores. El programa tiene una triple finalidad: obtener la aprobacion del Gobierno para irradiar productos cuyo consumo ha sido ya autorizado en otros lugares (patatas, cebollas), resolver problemas de caracter local (albaricoques, peras) y extender el programa a productos de importancia por sus posibilidades de exportacion (agrios, bananas, aguacates). Se ha montado una fuente de 30 000 Ci en una instalacion de irradiacion de nuevo diseno que puede utilizarse con finalidades multiples. En ella se tratan, con dosis de 20 a 5 x 10{sup 6} rad e intensidades de dosis de 1,5 a 800 krad/h, lotes de productos que oscilan entre unos cuantos gramos y 50 kg. Para los agrios se han investigado los efectos de las condiciones de cultivo, de la madurez, de las condiciones de la irradiacion y de la temperatura de almacenamiento. Con arreglo a un programa experimental se ha procedido a sueltas semanales de siete millones de ejemplares de la mosca mediterranea de la fruta y se han determinado las dosis letales para sus fases inmaturas. Se han almacenado a distintas temperaturas, y por periodos de 12 meses como maximo, lotes de 40 kg de patatas de las cosechas de verano y de invierno, despues irradiarlas con distintas dosis e intensidades de dosis. Se estan realizando ensayos sobre la eficacia de la irradiacion para retrasar la germinacion de la cebolla. Con bananas de tres regiones climaticas distintas y aguacates de tres variedades se estan realizando pruebas experimentales para retrasar la maduracion. Se han llevado a cabo algunos experimentos preliminares con remolachas, para tratar de evitar la perdida de sucrosa entre el momento de la recoleccion y el de la extraccion del azucar, con verduras deshidratadas, para reducir el tiempo de coccion, con dulces de chocolate rellenos, para desinfestarlos, y con zumos enlatados de naranjas irradiadas. Kartofel' letnego i zimnego urozhaja sorta ''Ap-tu-dejt'' hranilsja partijami po 40 kg v techenie 12 mesjacev pri raznyh temperaturah posle obluchenija dozami raznoj moshhnosti. Provodjatsja opyty po opredeleniju vlijanija obluchenija na zamedlenie prorastanija luka, a takzhe na zamedlenie sozrevanija bananov iz treh klimaticheskih rajonov i avokado treh sortov. Provedeny predvaritel'nye jeksperimenty na saharnoj svekle s cel'ju predotvrashhenija poter' saharozy v period mezhdu sborom urozhaja i jekstrakciej; na obezvozhennyh ovoshhah s cel'ju sokrashhenija vremeni ih prigotovlenija, na shokoladnyh izdelijah s nachinkoj s cel'ju dezinfestacii i na konservirovannom soke iz obluchennyh apel'sinov.
