Abstract

Six experimental studies are discussed, involving the application of oxygen concentration cells using the solid electrolyte ZrO{sub 2} * CaO (providing pure anion conduction as migration of oxygen defects) to basic research in process metallurgy: (1) The standard free energies of formation of FeO, Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}, SnO, PbO, Cu{sub 2}O, CuO and Ta{sub 2}O{sub 5} have been measured and expressed as functions of temperature in the range 500 to 1300 Degree-Sign C. (2) The oxygen pressure in liquid PbO-SiO{sub 2} solution has been measured at 800 to 1100 Degree-Sign C: the chemical activities of PbO and SiO{sub 2} and thermodynamic properties of PbO-SiO{sub 2} solution have been calculated. (3) One of the authors has measured the chemical activity of tin in liquid Pb-Sn binary solution at 700 to 900 Degree-Sign C, and the thermodynamic properties of Pb-Sn alloys have been calculated. (4) This author has also developed an oxygen gauge to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in high temperature gases in the range of P(O{sub 2}) = 10{sup -1} to 10{sup -20} atm and 500-1300 Degree-Sign C. (5) The rates of oxidation or reduction of pure iron and iron oxides by CO-CO{sub 2} gas mixture were calculated from the EMF results obtained with the oxygen gauge at 900-1000 Degree-Sign C. (6) The oxygen pressure in liquid iron, containing various amounts of carbon up to the saturation value, or saturated with oxygen, has been measured with the reference electrodes of graphite or (Ni + NiO) powder. It appears that this method could be used to determine the oxygen content in liquid iron at 1500-1600 Degree-Sign C. In addition, possibilities for applying oxygen concentration cells to the basic study of process metallurgy have been suggested and industrial applications have also been discussed. (author) [French] Le memoire a trait a six travaux de recherche fondamentale sur les processus metallurgiques, faits au moyen des cellules a concentration d'oxygene avec electrolyte de ZrO{sub 2} * CaO, lequel assure une conduction anionique pure grace a la migration de defauts d'oxygene. Ces travaux sont les suivants: 1. Les energies libres types de formation de FeO, Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}, SnO, PbO, Cu{sub 2}O, CuO et Ta{sub 2}O{sub 5} ont ete mesurees pour des temperatures de 500 a 1300 Degree-Sign C et exprimees en fonction de la temperature, les valeurs obtenues etant comparees aux donnees publiees. 2. La pression d'oxygene dans la solution liquide PbO-SiO{sub 2} a ete mesuree pour des temperatures de 800 a 1100 Degree-Sign C, l'equilibre etant realise a l'aide de plomb a l'etat liquide. Les activites chimiques de PbO et SiO{sub 2}, ainsi que les proprietes thermodynamiques de la solution ont ete determinees. 3. L'un des auteurs a mesure l'activite chimique de l'etain dans une solution liquide binaire de Pb-Sn pour des temperatures de 700 a 900 Degree-Sign C. Il a determine par des calculs les proprietes thermodynamiques d'alliages Pb-Sn. 4. En outre, il a mis au point un manometre a oxygene' pour mesurer la pression partielle de l'oxygene dans les gaz a haute temperature (500 a 1300 Degree-Sign C)dans l'intervalle 10{sup -1} a 10{sup -20} atm. Il a obtenu des valeurs autoconsistantes et reproductibles pour la force.electromotrice avec des melanges gazeux differents. 5. Les vitesses d'oxydation ou de reduction du fer pur et des oxydes de fer par un melange gazeux CO-CO{sub 2} ont ete mesurees au moyen du manometre entre 900 et 1000 Degree-Sign C. 6. Au moyen des electrodes de reference en graphite ou en poudre de (Ni + NiO), on a mesure la pression d'oxygene dans du fer a l'etat liquide, a differents teneurs en carbone, sature d'oxygene. Il semble que cette methode pourrait servir a determiner la teneur en oxygene du fer a l'etat liquide entre 1500 a 1600 Degree-Sign C. Enfin, les auteurs indiquent d'autres possibilites pour l'emploi de cellules a concentration d'oxygene dans les etudes fondamentales sur les processus metallurgiques, et ils discutent aussi leur application industrielle. (author) [Spanish] Se presentan en la memoria seis trabajos experimentales relacionados con la aplicacion de las celdas de concentracion de oxigeno con electrolito de ZrO{sub 2} * CaO (que permite una conduccion amonica pura debida a la migracion de defectos de oxigeno) a tareas de investigacion basica en procesos metalurgicos. 1. Se midieron las energias libres tipo de formacion del FeO, Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}, SnO, PbO, Cu{sub 2}O, CuO y Ta{sub 2}O{sub 5} y se expresan mediante funciones de la temperatura en el intervalo 500 Degree-Sign - 1300 Degree-Sign C. 2. Se midio de 800 Degree-Sign a 1100 Degree-Sign C la tension de oxigeno en solucion liquida de PbO-SiO{sub 2}: se calcularon las actividades quimicas del PbO y del SiO{sub 2}, y tambien las propiedades termodinamicas, de la solucion de Pb0-Si02. 3. Uno de los autores de la presente memoria midio la actividad quimica del estano en una solucion binaria liquida Pb-Sn de 700 Degree-Sign a 900 Degree-Sign C y calculo las propiedades termodinamicas de las aleaciones Pb-Sn. 4. Este autor ha disenado ademas un manometro de oxigeno para medir la presion parcial del oxigeno en los gases a temperaturas elevadas (de 500 Degree-Sign - 1300 Degree-Sign C) en el intervalo 10{sup -1} a 10{sup -20} atm. Se han obtenido valores coherentes y reproducibles para las fuerzas electromotrices con varias mezclas gaseosas. 5. Partiendo de los resultados EMF obtenidos con el manometro de oxigeno se calcularon las velocidades de oxidacion o reduccion del hierro puro y de los oxidos de hierro por accion de una mezcla gaseosa de CO-CO{sub 2}, a 900 Degree-Sign - 1000 Degree-Sign C. 6. Usando electrodos de referencia de grafito o polvo de (Ni + NiO) se midio la presion del oxigeno en hierro liquido que contenia diversas cantidades de carbon hasta el valor de saturacion, o bien estaba saturado con oxigeno o grafito, Es evidente que este metodo podria utilizarse para determinar el contenido de oxigeno en hierro liquido a 1500 Degree-Sign - 1600 Degree-Sign C. Ademas, se sugieren posibilidades de aplicar las celdas de concentracion de oxigeno al estudio basico de procesos metalurgicos, y se analizan diversas aplicaciones industriales.
