Abstract

This paper describes developments associated with the fabrication of UO{sub 2}-stainless steel plate type fuel elements containing up to 50 vol.% UO{sub 2}. The preparation of high-density spherical UO{sub 2} sintered particles in the 100- to 500-{mu}m size range and the compacting and sintering of cermet plate cores with the particles uniformly distributed in the stainless steel matrix are described together with procedures for hot roll-bonding the fuel plates. Rolling at temperatures up to 1300{sup o}C using total deformations in the 40% to 90% range were studied to establish optimum conditions for the production of high-density cores and to achieve good bonding between the plate components with minimum fragmentation and stringering of the UO{sub 2} particles. The manufacture of large fuel plates utilizing multi-core plates which are bonded together during hot rolling is also described. Data are presented on the mechanical properties of 30, 40 and 50 vol.% UO{sub 2}-stainless steel cermets, prepared as described above, and tested in the as ''rolled'' and annealed condition at various temperatures up to 700{sup o}C, using specimens taken laterally and longitudinally to the direction of rolling. Results are also included of thermal cycling tests between 50 and 800{sup o}C, which was done to study the effects on bond stability and cermet structure after 100, 500 and 1000 cycles. (author) [French] L'auteur expose le processus de fabrication d'elements de combustible UO{sub 2}-Inox en plaques contenant jusqu'a 50% en volume d'UO{sub 2}; il decrit la preparation de particules spheriques de UO{sub 2} frittees de densite elevee (taille dans la gamme de 100 a 500), le pressage et le frittage des plaques de cermet dans lesquelles les particules de UO{sub 2} sont reparties uniformement dans la matrice en acier inoxydable, ainsi que le procede de revetement des plaques de combustible par rechargement a chaud. On a etudie des operations de laminage comprenant des deformations allant de 40% a 90%, a des temperatures allant jusqu'a 1300{sup o}C pour determiner les conditions optimums de production des noyaux de densite elevee et pour realiser une bonne cohesion entre les elements constitutifs des plaques, la fissuration des particules de UO{sub 2} etant reduite au minimum. L'auteui decrit la fabrication de grandes plaques de combustible composees de plaques a plusieurs noyaux, liees ensemble par laminage a chaud. L'auteur donne des indications sur les proprietes mecaniques de cermets UO{sub 2}-Inox contenant 30, 40 et 50% de UO{sub 2}(en volume), fabriques comme on l'a indique plus haut et essayes bruts de laminage et recuits a diverses temperatures allant jusqu'a 700{sup o}C. Il a utilise a cet effet des echantillons preleves les uns perpendiculairement, les autres parallelement au sens du laminage. Il examine en outre l'influence de la taille des particules de UO{sub 2} et de l'uniformite de leur repartition sur les proprietes mecaniques. Il a determine egalement les forces de liaison entre le noyau et la gaine pour des cermets similaires dans la meme gamme de temperatures. (author) [Spanish] La memoria expone los recientes progresos en lo relativo a la elaboracion de elementos combustibles del tipo de UO{sub 2} y acero inoxidable en placas, que contienen hasta 50% de UO{sub 2} en volumen. Describe la preparacion de particulas esfericas de UO{sub 2} sinterizado, de elevada densidad, de granulome tria comprendida entre 100 y 500, y la compactacion y sinterizacion de nucleos de cermets constituidos por placas con las particulas uniformemente distribuidas en la matriz de acero inoxidable, asi como procedimientos para unir las placas de combustible por laminacion en caliente. Se ha estudiado la laminacion a temperaturas de hasta 1300{sup o}C, utilizando deformaciones totales del orden del 40 al 90%, para determinar las condiciones optimas de produccion de nucleos de elevada densidad y obtener una union satisfactocia entre los componentes de las placas, con fragmentacion y estiraje minimos de las particulas de UO{sub 2} . Tambien se describe la fabricacion de grandes placas de combustible utilizando materiales polinucleares que se unen por laminacion en caliente. Se facilitan datos sobre las propiedades mecanicas de cermets de UO{sub 2} y acero inoxidable de 30, 40 y 50% en volumen, elaborados como se ha indicado y ensayados tal como quedan despues de laminarlos, y despues de someterlos a recocido a diversas temperaturas que alcanzaron hasta 700{sup o}C, utilizando probetas tomadas transversal y longitudinalmente con respecto a la direccion de laminado. Se examina la influencia del tamaflo y uniformidad de la distribucion de las esferas de UO{sub 2} en la estabilidad de las propiedades mecanicas. Tambien se evalua la solidez de la union entre el nucleo y el revestimiento de cermets del mismo tipo, en identico intervalo de temperaturas.
