Abstract

Canada's first nuclear power station, the Nuclear Power Demonstration station (NPD), is intended to serve as a means of proof-testing the performance of the Canadian type of station using natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as moderator and coolant. It reached full power on 28 June 1962. Although designed for base-load operation it will, during the early stages, be operated part of the time on high-capacity.runs and part of the time on improvement periods. Progress has been favourable so far; the first high-capacity run of six weeks'duration yielded a capacity factor of 70%. Improvements already made have increased safety, improved performance and demonstrated potential methods of capital-cost reduction for future stations. For example, shaft seals on primary coolant pumps have been modified for better performance, freezer-type vapour recovery equipment has been replaced in favour of absorption columns to reduce heavy-water vapour loss, and flow limiters are being installed in sample lines to reduce losses of heavy water in the event of joint failures. It was upgraded and the reactor returned to operation by the end of the month. All safety devices operated correctly during the incident as did the provisions for containment of heavy water. (author) [French] La premiere centrale nucleaire du Canada, NPD, est une centrale de demonstration, qui doit servir a verifier les performances des reacteurs fonctionnant a l'uranium naturel et utilisant de l'eau lourde comme ralentisseur et comme fluide de refroidissement. Elle a atteint sa pleine puissance le 28 juin 1962 bien que concue pour etre exploitee comme centrale de base, elle fonctionnera au debut comme centrale d'appoint, ce qui permettra d'y apporter des perfectionnements pendant les periodes d'arret complet. Les resultats obtenus jusqu'a present ont ete positifs; la premiere experience de fonctionnement, qui a dure six semaines, a permis d'obtenir un facteur de puissance de 70%. Les perfectionnements deja apportes ont permis d'augmenter la securite, d'ameliorer les performances et ont montre en meme temps qu*il etait possible de reduire les depenses d'investissement pour les centrales futures. On a, par exemple, modifie les joints d'arbre des pompes du circuit primaire de refroidissement pour obtenir de meilleures performances; les appareils de recuperation de la vapeur, a congelation', ont ete remplaces par des colonnes d'absorption de facon a reduire les pertes de vapeur d'eau lourde; des regulateurs de debit sont installes en certains points pour reduire les pertes d'eau lourde pour le cas ou des joints cederaient. En decembre 1962, deux fuites simultanees dans l'appareil de rechargement en puissance ont entraihe une serie inhabituelle d'incidents; une quantite importante d'eau lourde a haute pression et haute temperature a ete projetee dans l'enceinte du reacteur ou sa purete isotopique a ete legerement alteree. On a redonne a l'eau lourde la purete voulue et le reacteur a pu recommencer a fonctionner a la fin du mois. Touslesdispositift de securite, notamment ceux destines a parer aux fuites d'eau lourde, ont fonctionne correctement pendant l'accident. (author) [Spanish] La primera central nucleoelectrica del Canada, NPD, constituye una instalacion de demostracion, destinada a comprobar el funcionamiento de los reactores alimentados con uranio natural y moderados y refrigerados por agua pesada. Alcanzo su regimen normal de potencia el 28 de junio de 1962. Aunque ha sido disenada como central para la carga basica, en las primeras fases funcionara en parte como central para la carga de cresta, lo que permitira introducir mejoras durante los periodos de paro. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el presente fueron satisfactorios-, el primer ensayo de explotacion, que duro seis semanas, permitio alcanzar un factor de potencia del 70%. Los perfeccionamientos introducidos han permitido mejorar el grado de seguridad y el rendimiento, y han revelado la posibilidad de reducir los gastos de inversion en centrales futuras. Por ejemplo, se han modificado las empaquetaduras de las bombas del circuito primario de refrigeracion para alcanzar mayor rendimiento; el equipo de recuperacion de vapor por congelacion ha sido sustituido por columnas de absorcion a fin de reducir las perdidas de vapor de agua pesada; se estan instalando limitadores de flujo en algunas tuberias para disminuir las perdidas de agua pesada en el caso de averias en las juntas. En diciembre de 1962, dos escapes simultaneos que se produjeron en el aparato de realimentacion del reactor en marcha dieron origen a una serie de incidentes poco comunes; una cantidad considerable de agua pesada a alta presion y temperatura se derramo en el recinto del reactor, alterandose ligeramente su pureza isotopica. Luego de purificarse el agua, el reactor pudo reiniciar su funcionamiento a fines del mes.
