Abstract

The absorption of strontium from the gastrointestinal tract is discussed in relation to the diet and the different components of a bread-milk diet. A brief review is given of the results obtained by using chelators and diets high in calcium in order to decrease the strontium absorption. The ratios of strontium to calcium in the different body compartments for adult man is discussed. The results of recent experimental work on normal man on a constant diet, are reviewed with particular reference to the urinary excretion and the retention of Sr{sup 85} contained in the experimental diet. The endogenous faecal excretion is also derived. These results are compared with those obtained from a single intravenous injection of radioactive strontium. For all the subjects the retention was obtained from whole-body counting using a pulse height analyser. The retention of the strontium in the skeleton is analysed and it is postulated that there are at least three degrees of binding of radioactive strontium with bone. In particular the retention several months after the dose and the relationship of this retention to the radiation dose to the skeleton from Sr{sup 90} is discussed. (author) [French] L'auteur etudie l'aborption du strontium provenant du tractus gastrointestinal, en fonction du regime alimentaire et des divers elements constitutifs d'un regime compose de pain et de lait. Il donne un apercu des resultats que l 'on a pu obtenir en utilisant des agents de chelation et en imposant des regimes alimentaires caracterises par une forte eneur en calcium, afin de reduire l'absorption du strontium. L'auteur examine les rapports strontium/calcium dans les differentes parties de l'organisme adulte. Il passe en revue les recentes experiences faites sur l'homme normal, soumis a un regime alimentaire constant, en tenant particulierement compte de l'excretion urinaire et de la retention du {sup 85}Sr contenu dans 'alimentation faisant l'objet de l'experience. Il determine egalement les excretions fecales endogenes. Il compare ces resultats a ceux que l'on obtient a la suite d'une seule injection intraveineuse de radiostrontium. Expone brevemente los resultados obtenidos al utilizar agentes de quelacian y de dietas ricas en calcio a fin de reducir la absorcion de estroncio. Estudia los valores de la razon estronciocalcio en diferentes partes del organismo adulto. Expone luego los resultados de experimentos realizados recientemente con sujetos normales sometidos a una dieta constante, atendiendo particularmente a las caracteristicas de la excrecion urinaria y a la retencion del (registered) {sup 85}Sr contenido en una dieta experimental. Ha calculado tambien las cantidades endogenas excretadas con las heces. Compara estos resultados con los obtenidos mediante una sola inyeccion intravenosa de estroncio radiactivo. En todos los sujetos, las cantidades retenidas se determinaron por recuento de la actividad del organismo entero con un analizador de amplitud de impulsos.
