Abstract

The unusual feature of graft polymer synthesis by solid ''bed'' irradiation in the presence of monomer vapours is that the activation centres initiating polymerization are in practice generated only on the bed; transmission of the kinetic chain to the monomer is impeded and new polymer chains grow only under the influence of the solid bed molecular forces. These features of gas phase processes enlarge the scope of the graft polymer technique, making it applicable to inorganic beds and usable in the synthesis of mineral organic products. If stretched synthetic fibres are used as a bed, on the other hand, their orientated macromolecules control the growth of new polymer chains and the graft polymer is formed directly as an orientated structure. Two-component combined fibres are formed as a result and the fibre-bed and ''grafted'' fibre may in appropriate circumstances each display their own particular complex of mechanical properties. En revanche, lorsqu'on utilise comme lits des fibres synthetiques allongees, les macromolecules orientees de ces dernieres dirigent la croissance des nouvelles chaines du polymere de sorte que le polymere greffe se forme directement a l'etat oriente. On obtient ainsi des fibres cominees a deux composants; la fibre servant de lit et la fibre ''greffee'' peuvent, dans des conditions appropriees, presenter chacune son propre ensemble de proprietes mecaniques. (author) [Spanish] de vapores del monomero respectivo se caracteriza por los siguientes aspectos: los centros activos que inician la polimerizacion solo se forman en la superficie del lecho, obstaculizando el transporte de la cadena cinetica al monomero y las nuevas cadenas polimericas se desarrollan por influencia unilateral de las fuerzas moleculares en la superficie solida. Estas particularidades del proceso en fase gaseosa mejoran las perspectivas que ofrece el metodo de polimerizacion injertada. Asi, es factible extender la aplicacion del mismo a lechos inorganicos y emplearlo para la sintesis de compuestos organo-minerales. Por otra parte, si se emplean como lechos fibras sinteticas estiradas, las macromoleculas orientadas de estas fibras dirigen el desarrollo de las nuevas cadenas polimericas de modo que el polimero injertado se obtiene directamente en estado orientado. Como consecuencia, se forman fibras combinadas de dos componentes; las fibras del lecho y las fibras ''injertadas'' pueden, en condiciones apropiadas, ofrecer la suma de las propiedades mecanicas propias de cada tipo.
