Abstract

Integral physics data for fast-reactor design. The recent compilation of the section on fast-reactor physics for the forthcoming second edition of 'Reactor Physics Constants' has necessitated a survey of the available experimental integral data. The choice of fast-reactor-physics integral data to be included in the compilation was based upon two criteria besides availability: (a) the data arise from relatively simple systems which lend themselves to simple theoretical analyses; and (b) complicated systems representing prototypes or mock-ups having general interest in terms of fast-power reactors. The first criterion was decided upon so as to list integral data for those systems of most general utility for the verification of cross-section parameters and calculational procedures. The second criterion is based upon presentation of current data on actual fast power breeder reactor systems. These are too complicated for simple theoretical analysis. They demonstrate the complexity of the actual reactor versus the more idealized and easily analysed critical experiment. Integral physics data for reactor design refer to measurements on reactor systems, critical or otherwise, of the various reactor physics quantities of practical and/or theoretical importance. The measurements are represented by critical mass, core shape factor, detector ratios, neutron spectra, material replacement experiments, reflector savings, neutron lifetime, Rossi-{alpha}, and similar quantities. These data are reviewed and the range of applicability is described. Limitations of experimental and analytical results are shown to exist in certain spectral and criticality analyses. Experimental and analytical investigations are suggested for future work. These will tend to narrow the gap between theory and experiment on 'known' systems. They also include investigations to 'firm up' the physics of large conceptual, fast power-breeder reactor systems. (author) [French] La compilation recente du chapitre sur la physique des reacteurs a neutrons rapides dans la preparation de la deuxieme edition de 'Reactor Physics Constants' a entraine une recapitulation des resultats disponibles des mesures experimentales globales. Le choix des donnees integrales connues relatives a la physique des reacteurs a neutrons rapides a faire figurer dans cette compilation a ete fait en fonction de deux criteres : a) informations recueillies a partir de reacteurs relativement simples et qui se pretent a des analyses theoriques simples, et b) informations recueillies a partir de reacteurs complexes, representant des prototypes ou des maquettes, et qui offrent un interet general pour les reacteurs de puissance a neutrons rapides. Le premier critere a pour objet de donner une enumeration des informations concernant les systemes les plus couramment utilises pour verifier les parametres des sections efficaces et les methodes de calcul. Le deuxieme critere est fonde sur la representation des informations courantes concernant les reacteurs a surgeneration, a neutrons rapides, existant. Ces informations sont trop compliquees pour qu'il soit possible de proceder a leur egard a des analyses theoriques simples. Elles prouvent la complexite du reacteur reel, par rapport a l'experience critique plus schematique et plus facile a analyser. Les donnees integrales intervenant dans les calculs de reacteurs sont les resultats des mesures faites, sur des types de reacteurs critiques ou non, des diverses grandeurs de la physique des reacteurs qui presentent un interet pratique et/ou theorique. Elles caracterisent le type de reacteur et aident a sa comprehension. Les mesures portent sur la masse critique, le facteur forme du coeur, les pourcentages de detection, les spectres des neutrons, les experiences de substitution de materiaux, le gain reflecteur, le temps de vie des neutrons, l'{alpha} de Rossi et sur d'autres grandeurs similaires. Les auteurs examinent ces donnees et decrivent leurs domaines d'application. Ils montrent que dans certaines analyses de spectre et d'etat critique, les resultats experimentaux et analytiques sont limites. Ils font des suggestions sur l'orientation des recherches experimentales et analytiques a venir. Elles combleraient le fosse entre la theorie et l'experience qui existe dans les systemes 'connus'. Ces propositions comprennent egalement des suggestions en vue de 'consolider' la physique de modeles theoriques de grands reacteurs surgenerateurs a neutrons rapides. (author) [Spanish] La preparacion del capitulo dedicado a la fisica de los reactores rapidos, en la segunda edicion de la publicacion 'Reactor Physics Constants' que aparecera en breve, exigio la recopilacion de los datos disponibles sobre experimentos integrales. La eleccion de los datos integrales de fisica de los reactores rapidos que se ha de incluir en esa seccion se baso en los dos criterios siguientes: a) que los datos provengan de sistemas relativamente simples que se presten para un analisis teorico sencillo; y b) que se trate de sistemas complejos que representan prototipos o maquetas que ofrecen interes general para el estudio de los reactores de potencia rapidos. Se fijo el primer criterio con la intencion de registrar los datos integrales de aquellos sistemas que tienen una utilidad mas general en la verificacion de los parametros y los procedimientos de calculo de las secciones eficaces. El segundo criterio se basa en la presentacion de los datos corrientes sobre sistemas reales de reactores de potencia reproductores rapidos. Estos son demasiado complicados para permitir un analisis teorico sencillo. Constituyen una demostracion de la complejidad del reactor real si se compara con la instalacion critica de experimentacio n mas esquematica y mas facil de analizar. Los datos fisicos integrales que intrevienen en el diseno de reactores constituyen el resultado de mediciones efectuadas en conjuntos criticos o subcriticos, de las diversas magnitudes fisicas que presentan interes practico u/o teorico. Esas magnitudes fisicas caracterizan al sistema y permiten comprenderlo. Las mediciones mencionadas se refieren a la masa critica, el factor de forma del cuerpo, las razones de deteccion, los espectros neutronicos, los experimentos de sustitucion de materiales, la economia del reflector, la vida de los neutrones, el {alpha} de Rossi y otras magnitudes analogas. Los autores examinan estos datos y definen su campo de aplicacion. Demuestran que existen limites de validez para los resultados experimentales y analiticos en ciertos estudios espectrales y de criticidad. Proponen algunas investigaciones experimentales y analiticas que podrian constituir el objeto de futuros trabajos y que contribuirian a colmar la laguna entre la teoria y la experimentacion en los sistemas 'conocidos'.
