Abstract

Now that successful separation of hydrogen, deuterium and hydrogen deuteride has been achieved by gas chromatography, similar studies are being made dealing with mixtures of hydrogen, tritium and tritium hydride. Since tritium is used in tracer quantities the usual katharometer cannot be employed for its detection. This difficulty has been overcome by providing immediately following the katharometer a vibrating reed electrometer equipped with a high resistance leak which allows continuous monitoring of the activity of any tritium or tritium hydride emerging from the column by means of synchronized recorders. Separation of such mixtures has been tested with columns packed with palladium on silica, silica, alumina, and alumina coated with chromium oxide or ferric oxide. No effective separation was obtained with the palladium on silica column. Good separation was achieved with the plain silica column where hydrogen was employed as the carrier gas, but helium failed to elute the isotopes. Satisfactory results were obtained with the coated, partially deactivated alumina packing when helium or neon was the carrier gas, but the best separation was found with a column packing of uncoated activated alumina. Calibration with helium-tritium mixtures of known activity plus equilibrated hydrogen-tritium mixtures also of known activity allows quantitative estimation  More>>

(author) [French] La separation de l'hydrogene, du deuterium et du deuterure d'hydrogene par chromatographic en phase gazeuse ayant ete realisee, on procede maintenant a des etudes semblables sur des melanges d'hydrogene de tritium et d'hydrure de tritium. Comme le tritium n'est present qu'en quantites infimes, on ne peut utiliser le catharometre ordinaire pour le detecter. On a surmonte cette difficulte en faisant suivre le catharometre d'un electrometre a lame vibrante, muni d'une fuite haute resistance, qui permet de mesurer, a l'aide d'enregistreurs synchronises, l'activite de toute quantite de tritium ou d'hydrure de tritium sortant de la colonne. On a essaye de separer ces melanges avec des colonnes garnies de palladium sur silice, de silice, d'alumine et d'alumine recouverte d'oxyde de chrome ou d'oxyde ferrique. Aucune separation effective n'a ete realisee a l'aide de la colonne de palladium sur silice. On a obtenu une bonne separa- tion avec la colonne de silice, ou l'hydrogene servait d'entraineur; mais l'helium s'est revele inef- ficace pour l'elution des isotopes. L'alumine partiellement desactivee et gainee a donne des resultats satisfaisants lorsque l'entraineur etait de l'helium ou du neon; mais la meilleure separation etait assuree par une colonne d'alumine activee et non gainee. (author) [Spanish] Ahora que, gracias a la cromatografia en fase gaseosa, se ha logrado separar el hidrogeno, el deuterio y el deuteruro de hidrogeno, se estan realizando estudios analogos con mezclas de hidrogeno, tritio e hidruro de tritio. Puesto que se utiliza el tritio en cantidades apropiadas para la marcacion, no es posible emplear el catarometro usual para su deteccion. Los autores han salvado esta dificultad colocando, inmediatamente despues del catarometro, un electrometro de lengueeta vibratoria, provisto de un escape de alta resistencia que permite medir continuamente por medio de registradores sincronizados la actividad del tritio y del hidruro de tritio que puedan salir de la columna. Los autores han ensayado la separacion de estas mezclas mediante columnas rellenas con paladio precipitado sobre silice, con silice, con oxido de aluminio y con oxido de aluminio recubierto de oxido de cromo o de oxido ferrico. Con el relleno de paladio precipitado sobre silice no se logro obtener separacion neta. Al emplear hidrogeno como gas portador, la columna de silice permitio obtener una separacion satisfactoria, pero no fue posible eluir los isotopos con ayuda de helio. Las columnas de oxido de aluminio recubierto de oxido de cromo o de oxido ferrico, parcialmente desactivado, dieron buenos resultados cuando se empleo helio o neon como gas portador, pero la mejor separacion se obtuvo mediante alumina activada sin recubrimiento. Para determinar cuantitativamente el tritio y el hidruro de tritio, es preciso calibrar el dispositivo con mezclas de helio y tritio de actividad conocida y, ademas, con mezclas de hidrogeno y tritio en equilibrio, de actividad tambien conocida. Na kolonne, zapolnennoj palladiem na kremnezeme, ne bylo dostignuto ehffektivnogo razdeleniya. KHoroshee razdelenie bylo dostignuto na prostoj kremnezemnoj kolonne, kogda vodorod ispol'zovals ya v kachestve gaza-nositelya, no gelij ne smog ehlyuirovat' izotopy. Udovletvoritel'nye rezul'taty byli polucheny na kolonne, zapolnennoj pokrytym i chastichno dezaktivirovannym glinozemom, kogda gelij ili neon yavlyalis' gazom-nositelem, no samoe luchshee razdelenie bylo dostignuto na kolonne, zapolnennoj nepokrytym aktivirovannym glinozemom. Kalibrovka so smes'yu geliya i tritiya izvestnoj aktivnosti plyus s uravnove-shennymi smesyami vodoroda i tritiya takzhe izvestnoj aktivnosti pozvolyaet provodit' kolichestvennyj analiz tritiya i gidrida tritiya.
