Abstract

The writers studied the effect of Co{sup 60} radiation on polyethylacrylat e specimens of different molecular weights, in solution and in the solid state. The solvents used were benzene and carbon tetrachloride, and the experiments were performed at ambient temperature with and without the presence of air. No after-effect was noted when the solutions were irradiated. When the diluted solutions were irradiated with increasing doses in the presence of air, a decrease was noted in the intrinsic viscosity and the sedimentation constant. The results could be explained by degradation. The direct and indirect effects were porportional to the dose and varied in different solvents. They were also both directly proportional to the initial molecular weight of the polymer. The influence of oxygen and inhibitors was studied. Specimens were also irradiated in the solid state, when it was found that cross-linking occurred with or without the presence of oxygen, and was accompanied by a varying degree of degradation. Finally, tests made on concentrated solutions in carbon tetrachloride showed some competition between degradation and cross-linking. Aucun post-effet n'a ete observe lors de l'irradiation des solutions. Si l'on irradie des solutions diluees en presence d'air avec des doses croissantes, on constate que la viscosite intrinseque et la constante de sedimentation diminuent. Les resultats obtenus peuvent etre interpretes sur la base d'une degradation. L'effet direct et l'effet indirect sont proportionnels a la dose et varient d'un solvant a l'autre. Ils sont egalement tous deux directement proportionnels au poids moleculaire initial du polymere. L'influence de l'oxygene ou d'inhibiteurs est etudiee. (author) [Spanish] Los autores estudiaron los efectos ejercidos por las radiaciones emitidas por el cobalto-60 sobre muestras de poliacrilato de etilo de diferentes pesos moleculares, en estado solido y disueltas en benceno y tetracloruro de carbono; los ensayos se realizaron a la temperatura ambiente en ausencia y en presencia de aire. Los autores no observaron efecto de postirradiacion alguno. Al irradiar soluciones diluidas con dosis crecientes de rayos gamma en presencia de aire, comprobaron que la viscosidad intrinseca y la constante de sedimentacion experimentan una disminucion. Los resultados obtenidos pueden interpretarse admitiendo que se produce una degradacion de las moleculas de poliacrilato de etilo. Tanto el efecto directo como el indirecto son proporcionales a la dosis y varian segun el disolvente. Ambos son directamente proporcionales al peso molecular inicial del polimero. Los autores estudieron la influencia oxigeno y de algunos agentes inhibidores. Tambien han sometido a irradiacion muestras en estado solido. En este caso, la reticulacion se produce tanto en presencia como en ausencia de oxigeno. Esta reticulacion va acompanada de una degradacion de importancia variable.
