Abstract

The author first describes four items of apparatus installed at the Saclay Nuclear Research Centre. (a) A laboratory Co{sup 60} source of 600 curies; the apparatus is simple and reliable but does not allow for the strength of the gamma flux to be varied; (b) An apparatus consisting of seven sources of Co{sup 60} (the strongest being of 1,000 curies) located in a concrete cell; a pneumatic device brings the source or sources needed into the working position; (c) A cell capable of holding 100 fuel rods from the new EL. 3 reactor; a part of the cell is equipped as a refrigeration chamber to permit experiments on food preservation under irradiation; and (d) The vertical channels of the EL. 2 reactor, known as the chemistry holes; when these channels are clad with cadmium leaf, the gamma flux obtained increases from 100,000 to 200,000 r./h., but they can be used only for irradiation of organic materials, as most of the materials to be irradiated are activated by the epithermal and fast flux.
