Abstract

Chemical reactions which may be useful for removing certain constituents from molten fluoride solution have been examined by use of appropriate radioisotopes and standard counting procedures. Classes of reactions studied have included (1) isotopic exchange between solute tracer and insoluble compound, (2) partition of solute between the melt and a solid solution of a similar compound, and (3) precipitation of the radioisotope as insoluble compound. In typical experiments, radiotracer LaF{sub 3} in LiF-NaF melts was shown to exchange rapidly with inactive La{sub 2}O{sub 3}. A similar rapid exchange in this solvent occurred between radiotracer CeF{sub 3} and inactive CeO{sub 2}; the electron transfer required in the latter case is apparently no barrier to the reaction. Addition of inactive CeF{sub 3} to each system increased the radiotracer content of the solution in accordance with the mass-action principle. When certain LiF-BeF{sub 2} melts containing CeF{sub 3} and rare-earth fluorides are cooled the primary phase is a solid solution of the trifluorides. Equilibria, between molten solution and solid solution, have been evaluated for various fluoride pairs. No significant deviations from the simple mass-action principle have been observed. (author) [French] Les auteurs ont etudie, au moyen do radioisotopes appropries et des procedes de comptage habituels, les reactions chimiques qui peuvent contribuer a l'elimination do certains constituants en solution dans des fluorures fondus. Les categories de reactions etudiees comprenaient 1. L'echange isotopique entre indicateurs dissous et composes insolubles; 2. La repartition du solute entre la masse fondue et la solution solide d'un compose analogue; 3. La precipitation du radioisotope comme compose insoluble. Des experiences caracteristiques ont montre que, dans les echantillons de LiF-NaF, il ne produit un echange rapide entre l'indicateur radioactif LaF{sub 3} et le La{sub 2}O{sub 3} non actif. Dans le meme solvant, il se produit aussi un echange rapide entre l'indicateur radioactif CeF{sub 3} et le CeO{sub 2} non actif; le transfert d'electrons necessaire dans ce dernier cas ne fait apparemment pas obstacle a la reaction. L'addition de CeF{sub 3} non actif a chacun de ces systemes augmente la concentration de radioisotopes dans la solution, conformement a la loi d'action des masses. Lorsque l'on refroidit certains melanges fondus de LiF et BeF{sub 2} contenant du CeF{sub 3} et des fluorures de terres rares, la phase primaire est une solution solide des trifluorures. (author) [Spanish] Los autores han estudiado las reacciones quimicas que pueden contribuir a la eliminacion, de ciertos constituyentes disueltos en fluoruros fundidos. Para ello han empleado radioisotopos adecuados y tecnicas corrientes de recuento. Las reacciones estudiadas incluyen: 1) el intercambio isotopico entre indicadores disueltos y compuestos insolubles, 2) la particion del soluto entre la fase fundida y una solucion solida de un compuesto similar y 3) la precipitacion del radioisotopo como compuesto insoluble. Algunos experimentos tipicos revelan que en las muestras de LiF-NaF el LaF{sub 3} utilizado como indicador radiactivo se intercambia rapidamente con el La{sub 2}O3 inactivo. En el mismo disolvente se observa tambien intercambio rapido entre el CeF{sub 3} radiotrazador y CeO{sub 2} inactivo; aparentemente, la transferencia de electrones necesaria en este ultimo caso no impide la reaccion. La adicion de CeF{sub 3} inactivo a cada uno de los sistemas produce un aumento de la concentracion de radioisotopos en la solucion, de conformidad con la ley de accion de masas. Cuando se enfrian ciertas mezclas de LiF y BeF{sub 2} fundidas que contengan CeF{sub 3} y fluoruros de las tierras raras, la fase primaria consiste en una solucion solida de los trifluoruros. Los autores han evaluado los equilibrios entre la solucion fundida y la solucion solida, para diversos pares de fluoruros. Byli izucheny sleduyushchie kategorii reaktsij: 1) izotopnyj obmen mezhdu rastvorennym indikatorom i nerastvorimymi slozhnymi veshchestvami; 2) raspredelenie rastvorennogo indikatora mezhdu rasplavom i rastvorom analogichnogo slozhnogo veshchestva v tverdom sostoyanii i 3) osazhdenie radioizotopa v kachestve nerastvorimogo slozhnogo veshchestva. V tipichnykh ehksperimentakh nablyudalos', chto radioaktivnyj indikator LaF{sub 3} v rasplavakh LiF-NaF bystro obmenivaetsya na neaktivnyj La{sub 2}O{sub 3}. V ehtom rastvoritele analogichnyj bystryj obmen proiskhodit mezhdu radioaktivnym indikatorom CeF{sub 3} i neaktivnym CeO{sub 2}; trebuemoe v poslednem sluchae perenesenie ehlektrona ochevidno ne prepyatstvuet ehtoj reaktsii. V sootvetstvii s printsipom massovogo dejstviya dobavlenie k kazhdoj iz ehtikh sistem neaktivnogo CeF{sub 3} uvelichivalo soderzhanie radioaktivnogo indikatora v rastvore. Pri okhlazhdenii nekotorykh rasplavov ZiF-BeF{sub 2}, soderzhashchikh CeF{sub 3}, i redkikh zemel' v kachestve pervichnoj fazy obrazuetsya tverdyj rastvor triftoristykh soedinenij. Dlya razlichnykh par ftoristykh soedinenij nablyudalis' ravnovesiya mezhdu rasplavlennym i tverdym rastvorami. Znachitel'nykh otklonenij ot prostogo printsipa massovogo dejstviya ne nablyudalos'. Byla pokazana vozmozhnost' izvlecheniya pri pomoshchi izbiratel'nogo osazhdeniya okisej razlichnykh grupp iz rastoplennykh ftoristykh rastvorov. (author)}
