Abstract

The method for determining the current efficiency of aluminium electrolytic cells described first by REMPEL et al. was improved by BOZOKY et al. by using the radioisotope Au{sup 198}. In that work, master alloys of aluminium with Au{sup 198} were made, and samples of this were measured by means of a G-M tube with a lead absorber inserted between the tube and the sample. In this work the specific activity of the master alloy was reduced by diluting with a known quantity of pure aluminium. In that way samples of diluted master alloy and samples taken from the electrolytic cell were of the same order of specific activity and could be measured without any absorber. Radioactivation analysis was employed in order to facilitate the application of the above method in aluminium plants and to avoid all restrictions and dangers connected with the handling of unsealed radioactive sources outside special radioisotope laboratories. Inactive gold was introduced into the master alloy and into the smelting bath in the electrolytic cell. The concentration of gold in samples of both the master alloy and the smelt was then measured after irradiating the samples in a nuclear reactor. (author) [French] La methode permettant de determiner le rendement des cuves a aluminium, exposee tout d'abord par Rempel et al., a ete perfectionnee par Bozoky et al. qui ont utilise a cet effet le radioisotope or-198. Des alliages types d'aluminium et d'or-198 ont ete prepares et des echantillons mesures au moyen d'un tube Geiger-Muller, un absorbeur en plomb etant insere entre le tube et l'echantillon. Les auteurs du memoire ont mesure l'activite specifique de l'alliage type apres dilution dans une quantite connue d'aluminium pur. Les echantillons d'alliage type ainsi dilue et les echantillons preleves dans la cuve electrolytique ayant alors une activite specifique du meme ordre, il a ete possible de la mesurer sans aucun absorbeur. Les auteurs ont procede a des essais d'analyse par radioactivation afin de faciliter l'application de cette methode dans les usines d'aluminium et d'eviter toutes les restrictions et tous les dangers qu'entraine la manipulation, en dehors des laboratoires speciaux pour l'etude des radioisotopes, de sources radioactives non scellees. De l'or inactif a ete introduit dans' l'alliage type et dans le bain de la cuve electrolytique. (author) [Spanish] El procedimiento para determinar el rendimiento de las celdas para la produccion de aluminio por electrolisis fue descrito inicialmente por Rempel y col. y fue perfeccionado por Bozoky y col. que emplearon el radioisotopo {sup 198}Au. Este procedimiento consiste en preparar aleaciones tipo de aluminio con {sup 198}Au y medir la elevada actividad especifica de muestras de la aleacion con un tubo Geiger-Mueller, introduciendo plomo como absorbente entre el tubo y la muestra. Los autores midieron la actividad especifica de la aleacion tipo despues de diluirla con una cantidad conocida de aluminio puro. De esta manera, las muestras de aleacion tipo diluida y las muestras tomadas en la celda electrolitica tienen una actividad especifica del mismo orden de magnitud, que puede ser medida sin necesidad de absorbente. Los autores han recurrido al analisis por radiactivacion con objeto de facilitar la aplicacion de este procedimiento en las fabricas de aluminio y evitar las restricciones y los peligros que supone la utilizacion de fuentes de radiacion no encerradas fuera .de los laboratorios de radioisotopos. El procedimiento consiste en introducir oro inactivo en la aleacion tipo y en la masa fundida de la celda electrolitica. Se extraen muestras de la aleacion y del electrolito y, despues de irradiarlas en un reactor nuclear, se determina la concentracion de oro. Pri provedenii upomyanutogo issledovaniya byli izgotovleny obraztsy splavov alyuminiya s zolotom Au{sup 198}, i proby ehtikh obraztsov s vysokoj udel'noj aktivnost'yu byli izmereny pri pomoshchi schetchika Gejgera-Myullera so svintsovym poglotitelem, vstavlennym mezhdu schetchikom i proboj. Udel'naya aktivnost' obraztsa splava byla izmerena posle razbavleniya ego opredelennym kolichestvom chistogo alyuminiya. Takim obrazom proby razbavlennogo splava i proby, vzyatye iz ehlektroliticheskogo baka, imeli udel'nuyu aktivnost' togo zhe poryadka velichiny i mogli izmeryat'sya bez vsyakogo poglotitelya. Dlya togo, chtoby oblegchit' primenenie ehtogo metoda na alyuminievom zavode i vo izbezhanie vsyakikh ogranichenij i opasnosti, svyazannykh s obrashcheniem s otkrytymi radioaktivnymi istochnikami vne osobykh laboratorij, prednaznachennykh dlya issledovaniya radioaktivnykh izotopov, byl ispol'zovan radioaktivatsionnyj analiz. K obraztsu splava, a takzhe i v nakhodyashchuyusya v ehlektroliticheskom bake plavil'nuyu vannu bylo dobavleno neaktivirovannoe zoloto. Kontsentratsiya zolota kak v obraztsakh splava, tak i v plavil'noj smesi byla zatem izmerena posle oblucheniya prob v yadernom reaktore. (author)}
