Abstract

Radiotracer techniques have been applied to the study of lubrication and wear in large diesel engines on a scale not before considered practical, with perfect safety and with unique technological results. Both lubricating-oil consumption and cylinderliner wear have been evaluated as a function of operating conditions on diesel engines in the 1000 HP range. Techniques were developed for tapping 200 gal (US) of lubricating oil with 60 mc of zinc-65 and determining oil consumption by sampling exhaust gas during operation under a variety of conditions. Measurement of the rate of lubeoil consumption could be made in 10 min rather than the 24 to 48 h previously required. Irradiation techniques were developed for neutron activation of the lower cylinder portion of a 48-in long, 8-in diam. cylinder liner. Suitable thermal-neutron shielding allowed production of 300-d manganese-54 which resulted in extending the useful life of the liner for wear studies by a factor of six to eight over that of a comparable liner thermally activated to produce iron-59. The fact that studies with such large quantities of radioactive material can be carried out in standard research facilities in the diesel engine field opens an entirely new area to tracer applications. (author) [French] On s'est servi d'indicateurs radioactifs pour l'etude de la lubrification et de l'usure des moteurs diesel de grande puissance, et cela a une echelle qui jusqu'a present n'etait pas consideree comme pratiquement realisable, avec m e securite parfaite et des resultats technologiques sans precedent. La consommation de l'huile de graissage et l'usure des chemises de cylindres ont ete evaluees en fonction des conditions de fonctionnement de diesels ayant une puissance au frein de l'ordre de 1000 HP. On a mis au point des techniques permettant de marquer 200 gallons d'huile de graissage avec 60 mc de zinc-65 et de determiner la consommation d'huile par echantillonnage des gaz d'echappement dans des conditions variables de marche. L'evaluation de la consommation d'huile de graissage a pu etre effectuee en 10 minutes, alors qu'il fallait auparavant de -24 a 48 heures. On a mis au point des techniques d'irradiation pour l'activation neutronique de la partie inferieure d'une chemise de 48 pouces de longueur et de 8 pouces de diametre. Une protection appropriee contre les neutrons thermiques a permis de produire du manganese-54 d'une periode de 300 jours, ce qui a eu pour resultat de donner a la chemise, en vue des etudes sur l'usure, une longevite de 6 a 8 fois superieure a celle d'une chemise comparable exposee a des neutrons thermiques de maniere a produire du fer-59. Le fait qu'on puisse employer d'aussi grandes quantites de substances radioactives dans des installations standard de recherche sur les moteurs diesel ouvre un domaine entierement nouveau pour l'utilisation des indicateurs. L'activation selective et une protection judicieuse contre les neutrons thermiques multiplient les possibilites d'application de la technique des indicateurs parce qu'elles permettent de limiter les mesures aux points les plus interessants, de reduire la quantite totale de substances radioactives requises pour l'etude de l'usure des elements de grandes, dimensions, et de mesurer simultanement, sans grande difficulte, l'usure de diverses pieces dont la composition chimique est identique. (author) [Spanish] Los autores han aplicado indicadores radiactivos al estudio de la lubricacion y desgaste de los motores diesel de gran tamano en una escala que hasta ahora no se consideraba practica; operaron con absoluta seguridad y lograron excelentes resultados tecnologicos. Han determinado el consumo de lubricante y el desgaste de las camisas de cilindro en funcion de las condiciones de funcionamiento de motores diesel de potencia del orden de 1000 C.V. Idearon metodos para marcar 200 galones (756 litros) de lubricante con 60 milicuries de zinc-65 y determinar el consumo de lubricantes tomando muestras de los gases de escape durante el funcionamiento del motor en condiciones diversas. Lograron medir en diez minutos la velocidad con que se consume el aceite, en vez de las 24 a 48 horas que se precisaban antes. Han perfeccionado tecnicas de irradiacion para activar con neutrones la parte inferior de una camisa de cilindro de 48 pulgadas (120 cm) de longitud y 8 pulgadas (20 cm) de diametro. Gracias a una proteccion adecuada contra los neutrones termicos, consiguieron producir manganeso-54 de 300 dias; por consiguiente, los estudios sobre el desgaste de las camisas de cilindro pueden llevarse a cabo durante un tiempo de seis a ocho veces mas prolongado que en el caso de una camisa similar, pero activada con neutrones termicos a fin de producir hierro-59.
