Abstract

The anti-wear action of sulphur and phosphorus compounds which are usually added to gear-oils depends on chemical reactions with the metallic surfaces of the gears. These reactions occur both at the bulk oil temperature (approx. 100 Degree-Sign C) and during high temperatures (approx. 600 Degree-Sign C) of short duration when the gearteeth come into contact under lead. The temperature flashes were simulated in an apparatus in which short pulses of electric current were used to heat metal wires immersed in mineral oil containing S{sup 35} and P{sup 32} labelled compounds in solution. The radioactivity acquired by the wires was measured. The extent of the reactions was determined as a function of temperature and time and the results were interpreted in terms of conventional kinetic laws. The modification of the reaction rates by the presence of other compounds in the solution was studied. The effect of pre-formed surface films containing sulphur phosphorus, chlorine and/or oxygen was also determined. In explaining the results, the structure of the materials used and the diffusion processes whereby the reactions occur beyond the initial stages were considered. Ces reactions ont lieu aussi bien a la temperature de la masse de l'huile (environ 100 Degree-Sign C) qu'au moment des brusques hausses de temperature (environ 600 Degree-Sign C) qui se produisent lorsque les dents d'engrenage viennent en contact avec pression. Les chocs thermiques ont ete simules dans un appareil a l'interieur duquel on a produit de breves impulsions de courant electrique pour chauffer des fils metalliques immerges dans une huile minerale contenant des composes marques au soufre-35 et au phosphore-32 en solution. Les auteurs ont mesure la radioactivite acquise par les fils, determine l'ampleur des reactions en fonction de la temperature et du temps, et interprete les resultats d'apres les lois de la cinetique classique. Ils ont etudie comment les vitesses de reaction etaient modifiees par la presence d'autres composes dans la solution. Les auteurs du memoire ont egalement determine l'effet de pellicules superficielles preformees renfermant du soufre, du phosphore, du chlore et/ou de l'oxygene. (author) [Spanish] El efecto de proteccion contra el desgaste ejercido por los compuestos de azufre y de fosforo que generalmente se anaden a los aceites para engranajes se produce en virtud de reacciones quimicas con las superficies metalicas de los engranajes. Estas reacciones tienen lugar tanto a, la temperatura media del aceite (aproximadamente 100 Degree-Sign C) como a las temperaturas elevadas (del orden de 600 Degree-Sign C) que se alcanzan durante periodos cortos cuando los dientes de los engranajes entran en contacto en estado de carga. Los autores han simulado los impulsos de temperatura en un aparato en el que se calientan, mediant o breves impulsos electricos, unos alambres metalicos sumergidos en un aceite mineral en el que se han disuelto compuestos marcados con azufre-35 y con fosforo-32. A continuacion midieron la radiactividad adquirida por los alambres. Determinaron el grado de la reaccion en funcion de la temperatura y del tiempo e interpretaron los resultados desde el punto de vista de las leyes de la cinetica clasica. Los autores estudiaron las modificaciones de la velocidad de reaccion debidas a la presencia de otros compuestos en la solucion. Tambien determinaron el efecto que ejercen peliculas superficiales preformadas que contienen azufre, fosforo, cloro y/u oxigeno. Para explicar los resultados, los autores han tenido en cuenta la estructura de los materiales empleados y los procesos de difusion a los que se debe el progreso de la reaccion una vez iniciada esta.
