Effect of CdS nanoparticles on fluorescence from Sm{sup 3+} doped SiO{sub 2} glass

Abstract

Sm{sup 3+} doped CdS nanoparticles have been prepared by sol-gel method. The effect of annealing temperatures and doping concentrations of CdS on the photoluminescence spectra of Sm{sup 3+} were studied. From the measurement of its optical absorption, three phenomenological Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters ({Omega}{sub 2}, {Omega}{sub 4}, and {Omega}{sub 6}) have been computed and used to parameterize the radiative properties. The influences of CdS on Sm{sup 3+} ions were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. The fluorescence spectra revealed that the emission intensity of samarium increased considerably in the presence of CdS nanoparticles. The evaluation of radiative properties of Sm{sup 3+} containing CdS showed that the {sup 4}G{sub 5/2{yields}}{sup 6}H{sub 7/2} transition in silica matrix had the potential to be a laser transition. - Research highlights: {yields} CdS nanoparticles were incorporated in Sm{sup 3+}-SiO{sub 2} matrix. {yields} Fluorescence intensity increased in presence of CdS nanoparticles. {yields} Annealing temperature play an important role in the fluorescence intensity of Sm{sup 3+}:CdS doped sol-gel silica glass. {yields} Non-linear parameterization indicate the high optical quality of the Sm{sup 3+}:CdS doped sol-gel silica glass.
