Effect of different modification agents on hydrogen-generation by the reaction of Al with water

Abstract

The effect of different modification agents on hydrogen-generation by the reaction of modified aluminum (Al) powder with water was discussed in this paper. The Al particle surfaces were modified by 3 different modification agents, notably gamma aluminum oxide (Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}), alpha Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, and titanium dioxide (TiO{sub 2}). The study found that different modification agents had different effects on the reaction dynamics of Al with water. Another finding was that the complete hydrogen-generation time of gamma Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} modified Al powder was obviously shorter than that of alpha Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} and TiO{sub 2} modified Al powders, because of their different induction time for the beginning of the reaction. It was concluded that the phase transformation and resultant weakening of the Al particle surface layer during processing strongly depends on the nucleation energy barrier on modification oxide grains. 1 ref.
