Capacitance change measurements during the aging of the model solid-liquid insulators under HVDC stress

Abstract

Capacitance change measurements in high voltage DC (HVDC) solid-liquid insulator systems were conducted. Industrial bakelite insulator materials in insulating oils were electrically stressed with a high DC voltage. The experimental set-up consisted of a metal tip-sample-metal plane. Measurements were conducted by increasing voltage by steps of 1 kV until insulator breakdown was achieved. The electrical stress duration of each voltage level was conducted at intervals of 2, 5, and 10 minutes. The capacitance change of the solid dielectric as well as the charges flowing through the samples were measured. Partial discharges were measured using oscillographs in order to determine the exponential increase of the capacitance change of the solid insulators in relation to the imposed electric field. A numerical model was then developed and compared with the experimental data. Results of the study suggested that impact ionization occurs during the dielectric aging stages of solid insulators. 12 refs., 1 tab., 5 figs.
