Eskasoni First Nation wind power : a case study

Abstract

Eskasoni Power is an agency owned and operated by the Eskasoni Band Council to develop local sources of clean, abundant and renewable energy. As part of a strategy to generate more power from renewable energy sources, the Eskasoni community on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia has signed an agreement to construct and operate seven to nine, 2 MW turbines to meet the foreseeable power needs of the community. The strategic approach is to generate as much electricity as possible within the community, buy supplemental power from the grid at a wholesale price and sell any excess power to the open market grid. This presentation described the turbine site development, construction and operation within the community. In addition to providing an environmentally progressive source of electricity for the community, the project will contribute to the economic development of the community by fostering skills and training in the emerging renewable energy sector. tabs., figs.
