The Drinking Rate of Fish in the Skagerak and the Baltic

Abstract

An investigation has been made into the drinking rate of four different fish species in the Baltic and the Skagerak. Different methods for the measurement of drinking rate in fish are discussed, together with available data from the literature. The significance of the drinking rate as a factor in the osmoregulation of fish is compared with other mechanisms such as the permeability for water and the tolerance to osmotic changes in the internal milieu.
