Abstract

The first part of this paper discusses the fundamental properties of some simple chopper systems. The relations for burst duration, exit angle of the beam after the slit, and maximum deflection are given the results are presented in graphical form for convenience. In the second part velocity modulation as a mean of bunching the particles behind a slit-deflector system is investigated. Expressions for the minimum distance for bunching {psi}{sub 0}, bunching factor {gamma}{sub 0} and HF power are given for the case of single or multiple slit modulation. Beam acceleration following velocity modulation has also been investigated. Results are presented in graphical fashion. In the last part, the space charge effects on an ion pack during bunching is given. A simple differential equation expressing particle motion in axial and radial directions has been derived on the basis of certain approximations. Numerical integration of the equation has been carried out for a number of values of the parameters. Dans la seconde partie, on etudie la modulation de vitesse en tant que moyen de regrouper les particules d'un paquet forme par exemple au moyen d'un deflecteur suivi d'une fente. Les expressions donnant la distance minimale de regroupement {psi}{sup 0}, le facteur de regroupement {gamma}{sup 0} et la puissance H.F. ont ete etablie dans le cas d'une modulation par une seule fente ou par plusieurs fentes successives. Le cas d'un faisceau subissant une acceleration apres la modulation de vitesse a ete egalement considere. Plusieurs diagrammes presentent les resultats d'une maniere simple. Dans la derniere partie on considere l'effet de la charge d'espace sur un paquet d'ions en cours de regroupement. Moyennant certaines approximations, une equation differentielle simple representant le mouvement des particules dans les directions axiale et radiale est obtenue. Cette equation a ete integree numeriquement pour plusieurs valeurs des parametres; les resultats de cette integration sont presentes sous forme de courbes. (auteur)}
