Abstract

By measuring the transmission of a flat beam of thermal neutrons, the moisture content of a parallelepiped shaped soil sample can be measured to {+-} 4 per cent and the moisture gradient along the longitudinal axis determined. The method permits the determination of chemically bound water and the measurement of diffusion coefficients of water into low hydrogenated materials. By measuring the intensity of fluorescence excited by 13 radiation it is possible to determine the thickness of metal coatings of less than 20 p. for metals of atomic number less than 40. This method has been applied to chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc. By using a suitable metal filter it is possible to measure coating thicknesses of metals differing by only one atomic number from the supporting material. By employing labeled cement it is possible to determine the extent or movement of cement grout used for soil stabilization and waterproofing. The kinetic of ion exchange of different ultramarines in aqueous solutions were studied by tracing the movement of labeled ions in the solution or in the exchanger. Values of the diffusion coefficients and activation energies were determined from the exchange studies. (author)Fren. [French] La mesure de la transmission  More>>

[French] La mesure de la transmission d'un faisceau plat de neutrons thermiques permet d'evaluer a {+-} 4 pour cent l'humidite d'un echantillon parallelepipedique de sol et d'en effectuer une exploration longitudinale systematique. La methode peut s'appliquer a la determination de l'eau de constitution ainsi qu'a la mesure des coefficients de diffusion de l'eau a travers des substances faiblement hydrogenees. En utilisant la fluorescence X excitee au moyen de rayons {beta} il est possible de mesurer des epaisseurs (< 20) de depots metalliques de faible numero atomique (Z < 40). Ces essais ont porte sur: Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu et Zn. L'emploi d'ecrans metalliques convenables permet de mesurer l'epaisseur d'un metal dont le numero atomique differe de 1 unite de celui du metal de base. L'ition de ciment dans les forages a pour but la consolidation et l'impermeabilisation des sols dans une certaine zone. L'extention de cette zone est etudiee en marquant le ciment et en envoyant dans les forages voisins non injectes une sonde Geiger-Muller qui decele si le ciment a ou non atteint ces forages. On peut ainsi controler l'extension de la zone injectee. La cinetique des echanges d'ions entre differents outremers et des solutions acqueuses est etudiee en suivant un ion radioactif, soit dans la solution, soit dans l'outremer lui-meme. Differentes valeurs de coefficients de diffusion et d'energies d'activation sont donnees par les echanges etudies. (auteur)}
