About the distribution of delays in G.M counters; Sur la distribution des retards dans les compteurs G.M

Abstract

We measure, with an oscillograph method the global time that pass between the time that a particle in a determined region of the studied counter and the answer of the amplifier associated to the counter. This delay is composed of the latency time T{sub l} and the T{sub q} delay, that result from the rise time finished of the impulse and whose value depends of the sensitivity threshold of the amplifier. The selection of (cosmic) particles generating discharge in the studied counter is obtained thanks to a telescope of two meters in coincidence whose opening is limited by a group of four counters in anti-coincidence with the first. The meter is arranged so that the median plan of the telescope crosses to a variable distance d of his axial thread. The measures have been done for different securities of the distance d and of the over-voltage V{sub s} applied to the counter. The results show that the statistical distribution of the delays is more spread especially when d is bigger and V{sub s} more reduced. (author) [French] On mesure, par une methode oscillographique le temps global qui s'ecoule entre le passage de la particule dans une region determinee du compteur etudie et la reponse de l'amplificateur associe au compteur. Ce retard se compose du temps de latence T{sub l} proprement dit et du retard T{sub q}, qui resulte du temps de montee fini de l'impulsion et dont la valeur depend du seuil de sensibilite de l'amplificateur. La selection des particules (cosmiques) generatrices de la decharge dans le compteur etudie est obtenue grace a un telescope de deux compteurs en coincidence dont l'ouverture est limitee par un groupe de quatre compteurs, en anti-coincidence avec les premiers. Le compteur est dispose de telle facon que le plan median du telescope le traverse a une distance variable d de son fil axial. Les mesures ont ete effectuees pour differentes valeurs de la distance d et de la surtension V{sub s} appliquee au compteur. Les resultats obtenus montrent que la distribution statistique des retards est d'autant plus etalees que d est plus grand et V{sub s} plus reduit. Les valeurs moyennes des retards observes varient de 7.10{sup -8} s pour d = 0 et V{sub s} = 200 V, a 90.10{sup -8} s pour d = 1,9 cm et V{sub s} = 50 V. La mobilite d'un electron libere au sein du melange gazeux emplissant le compteur sous une pression de 10 cm.Hg a ete trouvee egale: (2,1 {+-} 0,2).10{sup 4} cm{sup 2}.s{sup -1}.V{sup -1}. (auteur)}
