Study of the contamination of live-stock during periods of radio-active fall-out (1963); Essai d'etude de la contamination du cheptel en periode de retombees radioactives (1963)

Abstract

The authors have tried, during the radioactive period corresponding, to the nuclear tests of the autumn 1961, to follow under natural conditions the contamination of a herd of cattle made up 9 cows and 7 calves. The observations concern I{sup 131}, which was studied in particular, and the mixture of fission products. As far as the excretion of iodine in milk is concerned, the equilibrium is established slowly and the amount found in the milk is about 1 per cent of the daily intake. This figure is lower than those based on experimental studies (given in the literature). For the mixture of products, only a small number of elements is metabolised. The fraction found in 1 kilo of liver is about 5 x 10{sup -5} of the amount of Zr-Nb taker up per day, and about 4 x 10{sup -4} of the daily intake of Ru. These elements are not found afterwards in muscle. Les observations portent sur l'{sup 131}I plus particulierement etudie et sur le melange des produits de fission. En ce qui concerne l'excretion d'iode dans le lait l'equilibre s'etablit lentement et la quantite retrouvee dans un litre est de l'ordre de 1 pour cent de la quantite ingeree journellement. Cette valeur est inferieure a celles trouvees dans la litterature et resultant d'etudes experimentales. En ce qui concerne le melange de produits un petit nombre d'elements seulement sont metabolises La fraction que l'on retrouve dans un kilo de foie est de l'ordre de 5.10{sup -5} de la quantite de Zr-Nb ingeree par jour et de l'ordre de 4.10{sup -4} de la quantite de Ru ingeree par jour. Ces elements ne se retrouvent pas dans le muscle. (auteurs)}
