Temperature behaviour of photo-emissive films. The case of photo-multipliers used in scintillation counters; Comportement en temperature des couches photoemissives. Cas des photomultiplicateurs utilises dans les compteurs a scintillations

Abstract

This work concerns the changes in the spectral sensitivity of 3 types of normal photo-cathodes (Cs{sub 3}Sb, tri-alkali and bi-alkali without cesium) as a function of temperature. The photo-cathodes of cathodes of commercial photomultipliers (DARIO, E.M.I., R.C.A., A.S.C.O.F.) were used for these tests. The temperature range studied was -25 C to +55 C (except for the bi-alkali photo-cathodes which were tested up to +150 C) and the wave-length range was 3250 to 7000 angstrom. After a brief review of photo-electric effect theories, the experimental device is described and the measurement results presented. Finally, an interpretation of these results is proposed. For the normal range of scintillator emission, i.e. between 3000 and 5000 angstroms (Na I (Tl), plastics, anthracene) the temperature coefficient is always negative: -0.15 % C for Cs{sub 3}Sb and up to -0.5 % C for the most temperature-sensitive photo-cathode. Above 5000 angstrom, the temperature coefficient of Cs{sub 3}Sb films becomes positive: +0.5 % C on the overage. The accuracy of the spectral sensitivity measurements is {+-}4 % in absolute value and {+-}1 % in relative value. (author) [French] Cette etude porte sur la variation de la sensibilite spectrale de 3 types de photocathodes usuelles (Cs{sub 3}Sb, trialcalines et bialcalines sans cesium) en fonction de la temperature. Des photocathodes de photomultiplicateurs du commerce (DARIO, E.M.I., R.C.A., A.S.C.O.P.) ont fait l'objet de ces essais. Le domaine examine s'etendait en temperature de -25 C a +55 C (sauf pour les photocathodes bialcalines qui ont ete portees a une temperature de +150 C) et en longueur d'onde de 3250 a 7000 angstrom. Apres un rappel des theories de l'effet photoelectrique, le dispositif experimental est decrit et les resultats des mesures exposes. Enfin, une interpretation de ces resultats est proposee. Dans le domaine de l'emission des scintillateurs usuels, c'est-a-dire entre 3000 et 5000 angstrom (Na I (Tl), plastiques, anthracene) le coefficient de temperature est toujours negatif: -0,15 % C pour le Cs{sub 3}Sb et jusqu'a -0,5 % C pour la photocathode la plus sensible a la temperature. Au-dela de 5000 angstrom, le coefficient de temperature des couches Cs{sub 3}Sb devient positif: +0,5 % C en moyenne. La precision des mesures de la sensibilite spectrale est de {+-}4 % en valeur absolue et {+-}1 % en valeur relative.}
