Odd-odd N=Z nuclei and np pairing

Abstract

We review the experimental data on binding-energy differences for nuclei along the N = Z line with emphasis on the odd-odd nuclei. Qualitative pair blocking arguments are used to discuss the effect of np pairing correlations. Calculations based on a single-j shell model support these general arguments that seem to rule out the formation of a condensate of isoscalar np pairs.
