Insights into the phase relationships involved in the Bi-2223 melting and crystallization regions

Abstract

In spite of the progress attained in Bi-2223/Ag tapes, the sintered material presents a high porosity and insufficient texture. The melt-processing route could improve the microstructure, but the 2223 crystallization from the melt remains challenging. In the present work, 2223 precursors have been melted and slow-cooled, producing long grains with compositions falling in the vicinity of the 2223 composition region. The results suggest that a melt-processing route may be successfully employed if the equilibrium between 2223 and liquid is found.
