Acho Dene Koe experience in oil and gas projects

Abstract

Approximately 500 Acho Dene Koe First Nation members live in Fort Liard, a small community in the south-western part of the Northwest Territories. The paper described Fort Liard's experience in oil and gas development along with the impacts that have resulted from such activity. In 1994, Acho Dene Koe (ADK) opened up traditional lands to oil and gas exploration in order to maximize benefits to the community through job training, employment and business opportunities. ADK currently has joint ventures with Paramount, Anadarko and ADK in Shiha Pipeline; Alpine Environmental Services; Caribou North; Vancouver Helicopter; Akita/Sahcho Drilling; Formula Trucking; Explorer Data; and, Chevron Pipeline. Since land issuance in 1994, 3 pipelines (K-29 Pipeline, Shitah Pipeline, and Ranger Pipeline) have been constructed along with 2 major all season access roads. Other activities include seismic lines, exploratory drilling, camp catering businesses, and construction opportunities. The long term objective for Fort Liard is to have authority over its traditional lands within the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Yukon Territory. One priority is to gain long term revenue sharing with Canada.
