Abstract

This exploratory study aims at making a status of the present day situation of the foreign research works and of the long term simulations (2050) of socio-economical systems sparing of carbon (evolution scenarios from emissions abatement policies). The goal is to outline the interesting and useful elements, to shade light and contribute to the debate in France, and to give some guidelines and help and to strengthen the national decisions. Five steps have been considered in this study: the identification of the organizations involved in this research work in the different selected countries, a bibliographic survey of the works carried out by these organizations (Internet search and phone inquiries beside national experts), a collection of the pertinent documents, their analysis, and the elaboration of a synthesis per document with some conclusions. This study is the compilation of all these syntheses made for the five following countries: Germany, Netherlands, United-Kingdom, Switzerland, and Iceland. The scenarios developed by each country are indicative and describe a vision of the society in 2050 with different possible trajectories to reach this situation. They indicate: which goals can be achieved or at least prepared, what can do technologies and what should be the cost of the  More>>

They indicate: which goals can be achieved or at least prepared, what can do technologies and what should be the cost of the implementation of these technologies, how to overcome the constraints in order to reach the objectives, and what are the existing margins of freedom given to the political decision. Finally, this analysis shows how the other northern countries deal with the challenge of long term abatement of CO{sub 2} emissions and what solution they propose. (J.S.)}
