Abstract
Chalmers' critical reflections on schools of science theory has become a standard work in academic teaching which has been translated into 15 languages. It owes its popularity to Chalmers' manner of presenting this complex subject in an easily understandable way using a wealth of illustrative examples. This tradition has been preserved in the present completely revised edition, which again has been supplemented by a number of chapters. In addition to providing an outstanding overview of classical approaches to science theory, i.e. inductionism, critical rationalism and falsificationism, and presenting the theories of Karl Popper, Imre Lakatos, Thomas Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend it also deals with more recent developments in science theory. Special emphasis is placed on the 'new experimentalism', the stochastic approach of Thomas Bayes, the nature of the laws of natural science and the current realism versus antirealism debate.
