Development of a new sensor for the total organic carbon (TOC) determination; Sviluppo di un nuovo sensore per la determinazione del carbonio organico totale (TOC)

Abstract

TOC is a simple, selective and quantitative index to monitor organic pollutants in water systems. TOC is due to natural and antropic substances the latter being more responsible of dangers for human health, thence the importance of its determination in river, lake and sea water. Other points of useful interpretation concern the stability of TOC value during the time and the investigation and knowledge of the compounds accounted for its value. Here it is proposed the use of a sensor based on the electrochemical detection of CO{sub 2} produced by photochemical oxidation catalysed by TiO{sub 2} immobilized on the gas sensor surface. The optimum conditions were established, the most meaning of which regarding the nature of titanium dioxide alternatively obtained by chemical oxidation, by spraying, by commercial TiO{sub 2} powder immobilised on the indicating electrode, by commercial nanocrystalline TiO{sub 2} powder immobilised on inert supports. The last was the best arrangement. The sensor used in flowing conditions was checked and characterized by different compounds (citric acid, glucose, anionic and cationic surfactants). Preliminary tests on real matrices gave results well related to the expected ones on the basis of the traditional methods. [Italian] Viene descritto un apparato di misura per il  More>>
