Abstract
With an objective to ensure stable supply of non-ferrous metal resources, and enhance the ocean development technologies, research and development has been performed on a technology to mine the manganese nodules existing in deep ocean bottoms by using the fluid dredge system. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1987. In the comprehensive ocean experiment plan, simulations were performed on the ore lifting pipe towing resistance, and behavior of the ore collecting machine grounding system in association with changes of depths in the experiment sea area. In the research and development of the ore collecting system, some of the components of the devices related to the nodule take-in device and the driving device were fabricated and/or purchased. In the research and development of the ore lifting system, the module No. 1 of the pump lift device was given a combination test, and the submerged motor sensor was given a completion test. In addition, detailed design was made on the air lift device, and fabrication was carried out on the air compressor. In the research and development of the handling system, detailed designs were performed on the handling system including the ore collecting machine, pump modules, and ore lifting pipes. Discussions
