Abstract

With an objective to ensure non-ferrous metal resources such as nickel, cobalt, copper and manganese, and enhance the ocean development technologies, research and development has been performed on a technology to mine by using the fluid dredge system the manganese nodules existing in ocean bottoms as deep as 4,000 to 6,000 m. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1989. In the research and development of the total system, fabrication design was performed on a mining experimental vessel which takes the role of the base for the comprehensive ocean experiments. In addition, the comprehensive experiment implementation procedures were discussed, and such experimental simulation was carried out as operation of the vessel during handling and mining. Furthermore, discussions were given on the consistency of the ore lifting pipe and device with the handling system, and the system operating consistency, such as the handling method for the ore collecting machine. As part of the technical cooperation with France who is researching and developing independently a manganese nodule mining system, discussions were given on the compatibility of the mining experiment systems in Japan and France to execute the comprehensive experiments jointly.
