Abstract
This paper describes fiscal 1998 results of development of a new biodegradable packing material. Using natto resin (synthesized by irradiating fermented soybeans with {gamma} rays) for compound materials, existing biodegradable plastics resin was improved. Analysis was made on a correlation for example between honeycomb structure and water absorption rate of natto resin and between crosslinked density and mechanical strength. The production process of natto resin by electron-beam irradiation was developed, with the patent applied. The optimization of natto resin synthesis was established by using chemical regent (epoxy resin). After a compound sheet was formed by varying the mixing ratio of natto resin into poly(lactic acid), conditions were set such as formability, plasticity, etc. The production capacity of natto resin gel was improved over one thousand times more than before by electron-beam irradiation technology, with a production process established for one ton/day. The production cost of 40,000 yen/kg was achieved. No abnormality was recognized in a safety test using male rats nor in the mucosa-stimulative test using rabbits. Variability was negative. Using a microbial oxidative degradation analyzer, a completeness degradability test was carried out by analyzing the generating CO2 quantitatively, which revealed about 80% of natto resin was decomposed in two
