Abstract

During 50 years of the mankind atomic era, which was opened by nuclear weapon tests in the USA and USSR, our planet become more radioactive. Vast land and ocean territories are subjected to anthropogenic radioactive contamination as a result whereof the population receives almost everywhere additional irradiation nearly equal to the background, natural one and in some regions essentially exceeding it. The RAS Presidium considered at its meeting some consequences of nuclear tests and large-scale nuclear accidents, which are the basic sources of the land surface radioactive contamination. Published below is the scientific report on the above subject by Izraehl, a well-known specialist in the area of climatology and ecology, who devoted many years to studying the natural media radioactivity after nuclear explosions and who from the first days participated in liquidation of the Chernobyl accident consequences. Published are also the materials of the discussion at the RAS Presidium meeting.
