Deposition and runoff of heavy metals, sulfur and nitrogen in the vicinity of the Roennskaer smelter during 1998 and 1999; Deposition och avrinning av tungmetaller, svavel och kvaeve vid Holmsvattnet naera Roennskaersverken under 1998 och 1999

Abstract

The study is based on monitoring of atmospheric deposition of sulphur, nitrogen and heavy metals 17 km SSV a smelter in Roennskaer in the North part of Sweden. The monitoring during the period 1986 and 1999 showed decreasing deposition of sulphur to open field and forest (Norway spruce). The deposition of heavy metals to open field decreased with 90 % (As), 77 % (Cd), 53% (Cu), 65 % (Pb) and 43 % (Zn) between 1986 and 1999. The spruce forest showed in general similar reductions. Acidity of the runoff from a forested catchment (240 hectare) in the area decreased during the studied period, except for some years with high precipitation, probably due to reduced deposition of acidifying air pollutants. The annual volume weighted concentrations of heavy metals in the small stream decreased with 46 % (Cd), 26% (Cu), 47 % (Pb) and 61 % (Zn) between 1986 and 1999. The concentrations in 1999 were relatively low and the risks of effects on aquatic biota, caused by heavy metals, were low compared to the situation during 1986 to 1989. The decrease of heavy metals in deposition and stream water was caused by reductions of emissions from the smelter. Reduced regional deposition,  More>>
