Abstract
The differential cross-section with respect to Feynman-x (x{sub F}) and transverse momentum (P{sub {Tau}}) for charm meson production using targets of Be, Al, Cu, and W are measured. In the range 0.1 < x{sub F} < 0.7, d{sigma}/d x{sub F} is well fit by the form (1-x{sub F}){sup n} with n = 3.9 {+-} 0.2. The difference between n values for D{sup -} and D{sup +} is 1.1 +- 0.4. However, an asymmetry of 0.18 {+-} 0.04 favoring the production of D{sup -} compared to D{sup +} is found . In the lower P{sub {Tau}} range, < 2 GeV, d{sigma}/d P{sub {Tau}}{sup 2} is well fit by the from exp(-b x P{sub {Tau}}{sup 2}) with b = 1.03 {+-} 0.04 GeV{sup -2}, while in the higher P{sub {Tau}} range, 0.8 to 3.6 GeV, it is well fit by the form exp(-b{sup `}x P{sub {Tau}}) with b{sup `} 2.76 {+-} 0.06 GeV{sup -1}. The shape of the differential cross-section has no significant dependence on atomic mass of the target material. (author).
