Abstract
The Japan-China joint research on `Energy and the Environment` has been continued by the Institute of Energy Economics and the Institute of Energy in China. This paper summarizes results of the research obtained from May 1990 to March 1991 as an interim report. The report consists of 5 chapters which are titled `The energy situation and environmental problems in China (an outline)`, `Energy and environmental problems (a survey report by The Institute of Energy in China)`,`Business trip field survey report`,`The Survey of actual energy consumption and the present acid rain status` and `The 1989 China Environment bulletin`. Though China has a great reserve of energy in total (high sulfur coal shows an overwhelmingly large percentage of the whole reserve), the gross reserve is neither much in a comparison with a population rate nor uniform in distribution. Energy is one of the important factors for the economic growth in China, but a lot of problems are likely to happen such as industrial air pollution, acid rain, ecological environment, traffic problem, deforestation, soil run-off, etc. 39 figs., 43 tabs.
