Abstract
A study undertaken in 1987 for the Department of Energy, of small estuaries and embayments around the coast of the United Kingdom, identified the Wyre as one of the most promising sites for the construction of a small tidal power barrage. Enquiries showed that Organisations with interests in and around the Wyre had carried out extensive surveys and investigations into the physical and environmental aspects of the estuary, many of which would be relevant to the development of a tidal power scheme. It was identified that a barrage constructed on the Wyre, in addition to generating clean renewable energy may also act as a road crossing between Fleetwood and Over Wyre, thereby avoiding the present diversion via the Shard Toll Bridge located some 8km upstream of the town of Fleetwood.
