Investigation of the energy distribution of ions, striking the cathode in an abnormal glow discharge; Issledovanie ehnergeticheskoj funktsii raspredeleniya ionov, postupayushchikh na katod anomal`nogo tleyushchego razryada

Abstract

The energy spectrum of ions at the cathode in an abnormal glow discharge has been investigated for gases H{sub 2}, D{sub 2}, He, Ar at discharge current densities j{sub a}{approx}>10mA/cm{sup 2} and gas pressures p{approx}>1 Torr. It is shown that ion energy distribution is spread up to cathode fall voltages V{sub c}; the most of the particles in the ion stream have energies not higher than (0,1-0,3){sub 2}V{sub c}. It is found that with rising of the value j/p{sup 2} the low energy portion of the spectrum is transferred from the gradually decay curve to one having low-energy peak. It is supposed that this phenomenon is due to peculiarities of space distribution of electron ionization intensity in dark cathode space. 14 refs.; 9 figs. (author).
