Effect of poloidal field null on alpha-particle orbits in axisymmetric tokamaks

Abstract

The effect of a poloidal magnetic field null (X-point region) on the orbits of energetic fusion products is analysed. It is found that the resulting poloidal distribution of lost particles is strongly peaked in the vicinity of the X-point, for an axisymmetric magnetic field distribution. This effect should be considered, together with the effect of field ripple, in the analysis of energetic particle diagnostics and of loading of wall structures.
