Abstract
Three different residential areas in the city of Oestersund were studied in order to judge the possibilities to substitute electric heating in one-family houses for district heating, or other non-electric heating systems. Economic estimates were made for the different alternatives. The cost differences were very small for the alternatives and the economic incentive for the substitution was very good for the utilities, but not sufficient for the house owners. In one of the areas, an investment subvention of about USD 220/kW was offered to the house owners for connecting to the district heating system, which resulted in that over 75 % opted for connecting.
