Instrument systems for environmental radiation and radioactivity

Abstract

Assessment of impact of low level radiation calls for development of techniques and instrumentation for dosimetric purposes. The specifications for such instruments are quite stringent since these have to be operated in a hostile environment on a real time basis often requiring to meet very low sensitivities. Though the basic measurement systems may seem rudimentary in some cases, the automation and refinement required to meet the specifications pose challenges. The challenges have been met successfully to a large extent. The paper describes the indigenous development of various instruments for measurement of environmental radiation and radioactivity.
