The response of CsI(T1) counter to light and intermediate fragments in the energy range 2-77 MeV/A; Razreshenie CsI(T1)-detektora pri registratsii fragmentov legkikh i srednikh mass v diapazone ehnergij 2-77 MehV/A

Abstract

The response of CsI(T1) crystal 200 mm in diameter and 15 mm thick coupled to photomultiplier FEU-173 by hollow light guide to light particles and intermediate mass fragments has been investigated using U-400 (FLNR) secondary beam facility in the reaction {sup 11}B(20 MeV/A)+{sup 181}Ta and LISE (GANIL) magnetic spectrometer where secondary beams were produced in the reactions {sup 36}Ar(44 MeV/A)+{sup 58}Ni, {sup 18}O(63 MeV/A)+{sup 9}Be. The high energy resolution 0.7-6.2% was obtained independently of the particle nature for Z {<=} 20 in the energy range 2-77 MeV/A. The mass dependence of CsI(T1) light output on Z, E and time interval for integration of the anode pulse was estimated too. Particle discrimination for Z=1-7 using pulse-shape analysis method was demostrated for the secondary particles detected at the fixed energy. The light output of CsI(T1) was found to be linear at energies above 5 MeV/A. Present measurements indicate that the mass dependence is a very significant effect in the calibration of CsI(T1) scintillators for light and ontermediate mass fragments. 19 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.
